RLCS World Championship: Playoffs Preview

Luna Meschiari

It’s finally time. We have reached the playoffs of the Rocket League World Championship! 24 teams from seven different regions had the opportunity to seize the moment and drive away as ultimate champions. The Wildcard Stage was quite eventful, as was the Group Stage, but now we turn our heads toward the playoffs.

This is the first Rocket League World Championship since 2019. Back then, the prize pool was $529,500. In 2022, it has skyrocketed to a whopping $2,085,000. This year, the champions will get $600,000, $400,000 will go to the runners-up, and $200,000 goes to the third-place team.

RLCS World Championship Group Stage Recap

On the first day of the Group Stage, we saw eight of the top teams going at it. Four teams that got through the Wildcard Stage versus four teams that managed to qualify directly. Since it was a double elimination format, teams that lost could recover by going into the lower bracket. Version1, Moist, SMPR, and BDS were the victorious teams.

Day two was also amazing to watch with plenty of action packed matches going on, as the other four wildcard entrants battled the other four seeded teams. FaZe Clan won against The Club, but the match ended up being controversial due to multiple technical issues. The boost was not registering for Caden “Sypical” Pellegrin at times, and he ultimately changed his controller. FURIA Blast, G2 Esports, and Falcons were the other victors.

The third day ended with all matches generally being one sided, with one exception. G2 Esports vs FURIA was the most exciting match so far. G2 managed to pull out a victory, but FURIA got themselves on everybody’s radar by playing exceptionally. Moist, FaZe Clan (who unbelievably defeated Falcons) and Team BDS were the other winners.

RLCS World Championship Playoffs Format

The nail-biting, long awaited playoffs are here and are starting today. Eight incredibly skilled teams have gotten themselves into the final top eight, ensuring a shot at the ultimate goal, The World Championship.

All matches will be best out of seven, with this leg of the tournament featuring single elimination brackets. Today is going to be a wild ride, that is for certain. We are expecting all teams to go full throttle as the line that divides elimination from championship is so incredibly small.

The quarter finals will feature:

  • Moist Esports VS FURIA
  • Team BDS VS Karmine Corp
  • G2 Esports VS The General NRG
  • FaZe Clan VS Version1

Moist Esports, G2 Esports, FaZe Clan, and Team BDS are the teams that have gotten themselves qualified from the powerful upper bracket. Version1, NRG, Karmine Corp, and FURIA are the other teams that will be joining them in the playoffs.

Team Falcons, to the shock of many fans, have been eliminated, and will have to start preparing for the next big tournament. We have no doubt that they will come back even stronger, and with a vengeance.

Moist is the definite favourite against FURIA, but never forget that this is Rocket League, where anything can happen. FURIA is a strong team and if they do end up going down, they will surely go down swinging.

BDS and Karmine Corp are two EU teams that will go at it. In their last matchup, Karmine Corp got the upper hand and are looking to do the same here. The winner will go up against the victor between Moist and FURIA.

G2 and NRG will be a show to behold as well. Both NA teams have had great matches between themselves in the past, so there is no reason to think the same won’t happen here. NRG might have had a bit more success in the past years, but G2 has been really dominant this season.

FaZe and V1 have matched up quite a bit this year, with FaZe winning 4 out of the last 5 matches. This might look like it will be another easy win for FaZe, but do not underestimate V1. V1 is more than capable of knocking FaZe out of championship contention.

Sundays are usually great, but this will be an extraordinary one. The thrilling conclusion of the Rocket League World Championship is coming to a close, but there are tons of matches to be played still.
