The origins of Dota 2 come from the original Defense of the Ancients. The original Dota was a community-created mod for Warcraft III. After several years of successful modding and competition, Valve acquired the intellectual property rights to Dota in 2009. Then in 2013, Valve would officially release Dota 2. Of course, Dota 2 was built with esports in mind and it would not take long before Valve was holding some massive events for the game. In fact, the first unveiling of Dota 2 came at The International in 2011. TI, as it would become to be known, would grow into arguably the biggest esports event in the world.
