League of Legends is arguably the biggest esport on the planet, boasting millions of players and millions of watchers for their World Championship. Riot Games launched League of Legends in October 2009, following the massive success of the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients. League did not stray too far from the basic premise of what would become the MOBA-genre, as two teams of five compete to destroy the opponent's base. Upon release, players had 40 champions to choose from. That number has ballooned to over 150, as the game continues to grow every year. League of Legends' first World Championship took place less than two years after launch, with eight teams from Europe, North America, Southeast Asia competing. Fnatic would walk away as the winners and the lineage of Worlds began. Since then, LoL has formed competitive regions all over the planet, vying for their place in International events.
