Whirlwind FX Atom 60% Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

If you find yourself in the market for a smaller keyboard, then you need to be looking at the Whirlwind FX Atom. Both the hardware and the SignalRGB software are a fantastic choice for gamers.

Our Score

Gamers looking for a 60% mechanical can’t get much better than the Whirlwind FX Atom 60% mechanical keyboard.

Whirlwind FX is a fairly new gaming startup looking to revolutionize the gaming experience. This gamer-founded company focuses on deepening immersion through its groundbreaking SignalRGB software. Complimenting SignalRGB, their stellar mechanical keyboards like the Atom 60% Mechanical Gaming Keyboard are impressive.

A lot of gamers prefer a TKL or 60% gaming keyboard over a full-sized keyboard. For many gamers, there’s no need for a full keyboard. These smaller keyboards give gamers more desk room to maneuver their mouse. But not all 60% gaming keyboards are cut from the same cloth.  And with the SignalRGB software, the FX Atom is in a league of its own.

First Impression of the Whirlwind FX Atom 60% Gaming Keyboard

At first glance, it looks like another small keyboard. But the Whirlwind FX Atom may be a 60% mechanical keyboard, but it packs a huge punch. The Atom is just a bit bigger than the Nintendo Switch. It’s thin and compact enough to take on the go.

Its matte black plastic helps prevent pesky fingerprint smudges. The white, anodized aluminum backplate doesn’t clash with the rest of the design and, enhances its per-key RGB illumination.

The Atom uses blue clicky Gateron switches that feel nice tapping on. Whirlwind FX also offers the Atom with Red linear and Brown tactile switches. Because it’s 60%, it has a secondary function layer accessible by pressing the FN key and the corresponding function key.

The Atom is a well-constructed, high-quality little monster of a keyboard. It has four rubber pads at each corner to prevent slippage and two flip-down feet.

SignalRGB Takes the Atom to the Next Level

The SignalRGB software accomplishes exactly what Whirlwind FX set out to do: “develop fully immersive experiences that add next-level presence and depth.” SignalRGB allows you to synchronize the RGB of all your favorite peripherals. SignalRGB supports over 200 brands including SteelSeries, Razer Logitech, ASUS, Corsair, and more.

One of the coolest features of SignalRGB is the screen ambiance syncs your peripheral’s lighting with any game’s video or visual content’s dynamic lighting. It includes free, customizable light effects and audio visualizers. There’s also a paid version, but it’s honestly not necessary.

Pro-Tip

The combination of SignalRGB settings with the stellar audio from Audeze Mobius, and music from Tidal’s HiFi and Masters? OMFG!!! Heaven! Like this is a whole fucking vibe. Just saying.

Final Take on the Whirlwind FX Atom 60% Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

I really enjoyed typing on the Atom and playing around with SignalRGB. The keystrokes were clicky enough to make me happy. The synchronized lighting effects with my Razer Goliath mousepads, my Razer Naga Trinity mouse, and the Atom made getting work done hella fun.

As a writer, gamer, and serial multitasker, a 60% keyboard just isn’t for me. If the Atom were wireless, though, I’d have a use for it around the house.
