Fortnite lore can be a part big part of the game for some players. The story behind the title is a major reason to play for a lot of people, and right now we’re expecting it to come back in a big way. With older Fortnite factions like the Seven making a comeback. If you want to follow Forntite lore though, there’s quite a bit which has happened already.

Fortnite Lore Explained – Complete Story

The story can be a bit confusing if you’re just jumping in. You might not need to understand Fortnite lore to play the game, but it can enhance it. Although, more recent Fortnite seasons have been lighter on lore since Donald mustard left the development team. It’s a part of the game that is often teased to come back though. If you want to catch back up on Fortnite lore, this is how it all works:

Fortnite Chapter 7 Lore

Most recently, we’ve moved to a new island for Fortnite Chapter 7. This has been a bit of a restart. Epic has promised Fortnite lore is coming back this season, with the Seven factoring into the story once again.

But, so far, it’s not really been anything.

The characters just randomly appeared in a new map. There’s no lore reason why we’re here. The random collabs haven’t really factored in either. It seems the Seven are active on this island again though. Every now and again the Visitor reappears with his big floating ball. It’s now lasering people if shot at. So there’s some links to past Fortnite lore already in here. But the story so far isn’t really anything more than a cameo and some new Seven skins.

Fortnite Chapter 6 Lore

Chapter 6 might have been an absolute low point for recent Fortnite lore. There wasn’t much of it.

Following on from the end of Chapter 5, the two main characters Jonesy and Hope just jumped into a portal to reach the new island. That’s the explanation for why we’re on a new world for Chapter 6.

A plot developed over the season with Daigo. Who fought the demon entities on the map, only to be taken over by one. Culminating, somehow, in Jonesy and Hope going to a Springfield world for a while. Then back to Chapter 6’s map to kill a giant squid.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Lore Explained

The Chapter 5 Fortnite lore is where we got a bit of a reset. With a change of leadership behind the scenes in Fortnite, the old lore was pretty much retired. We got a simpler story going forward. It began with a storyline about Peely getting kidnapped, told through a loading screen. Essentially, Jonesy went and rescued him. These two Fortnite skins are pretty consistently good friends in the lore. While the plot lines don’t always add up, often characters are a little more consistent.

Then, we had a few seasons which fit the same pattern. A villain appears, like Megalo Don or Doom. They take over the island. At the end, the players defeat them. Next season the same thing happens.

Then we jumped into a portal and went back to an old map. There was a storyline behind this with its being Hope’s dream and her graffiti coming to life, but those voice lines weren’t actually activated in-game. So it’s really more background information than actual Fortnite lore.

Earlier Fortnite Lore

Those are the last few years of Fortnite lore, but there was more. At one point, Fortnite had a fairly consistent story. it was convoluted, and not really essential to play properly. But a lot of people enjoyed following it.

The whole plot line revolved around the Zero Point. An instability which was at the center of Fortnite lore. Various faction competed for control, like the Seven and the IO. Even Midas at some points, flooding the map trying to stop the loop. Eventually, we saw Agent Jones (part of the organization running the loop) jumping into the loop itself.

This storyline crossed the first few Chapters. Developing with different factions. It involved the world getting pulled into a black hole. The island literally flipping over at one point. Getting destroyed and put back together by players. There was always a storyline to go with the Fortnite live events. Although, the story felt like it would just roll on forever instead of getting a resolution. Some elements from early Fortnite lore are making a comeback more recently. We’ll have to see what happens with them in Chapter 7.

Did Fortnite Reset Its Lore?

Kind of. Fortnite lore had a bit of a rest back in Chapter 5. It ditched most of ongoing stories and characters. Although, elements from the older lore are supposed to be making a return soon. All part of the Chapter 7 Fortnite lore.

Who is the Main Villain in Fortnite?

Fortnite doesn’t really have a main villain. Each season, one of the Battle Pass skins fulfils the role as a Fortnite villain. But they don’t tend to get much of a story beyond being “evil” and then stopped. The Seven and IO were various factions in the past, but there haven’t been here in a while.

Do Fortnite Collabs Fit into Lore?

The biggest part of the game in modern seasons are Fortnite collabs, but how does all of this fit into Fortnite lore? For the most part, not well.

Fortnite lore can accommodate characters from various media appearing on the map since the game is mixture of different realities. there’s rarely a lore reason given though. It’s just something that happens. For example, the South Park characters being on the map in C7 S1 had no plot relevance. It vanished without being mentioned, just the same as it arrived.

Other collabs are more impactful. The full Fortnite story involves a ton of Marvel characters just appearing, and only doing things for a single season before vanishing. It can be a bit confusing, but it’s just how Fortnite is. The C6 story involved a lengthy detour where players invaded the Death Star.
