You don’t do it through the item shop in-game. Instead, you have to use the Epic website. These are the steps to redeem your Fortnite code:

• Log in – If you need to verify with 2FA or MFA, do that
• Head to the Redeem Code section
• Type in your single-use code
• Hit redeem

Once that’s done, it should register in your account! Sometimes if you’re sat in the lobby as you input the code, you’ll have to jump out and back in, or enter a game then come back to the lobby. But Fortnite codes tend to redeem very quickly. Once you’ve gone through those steps, you’ll have the items in no time.
