We’ve just had a Fortnite Medallions hotfix pushed out… and it’s a big one. For some reason, rather than a new season, or even an update, Epic has made possibly the biggest meta change in years in a random hotfix.
Instead of waiting for Chapter 7, we’ve had a huge change to the game tonight. With a tiny hotfix that is going to have major ramifications for every game. It’s a change that some players might have been asking for since Chapter 5, and for others it’ll be a grim day. Fortnite Medallions have been removed, for the first time in a main season since Chapter 4.
It’s come with some other changes, like removing one of the best items in the Fortnite loot pool too. However, the change isn’t affecting tournaments. In fact, this whole Fortnite hotfix is meaning a major change to how tournaments work.
The latest Fortnite hotfix is making the biggest change to the meta in years by removing the Medallion mechanic entirely! It’s the second hotfix which has changed up the medallions this season. First time nerfing them, since they were clearly overpowered together. Not happy with the reduction though, Epic has now removed them entirely. These are the changes in the Fortnite Medallions hotfix:

Those are the biggest changes. But there are tons of changes that will have a massive impact on the meta.
The big headline change of this Fortnite hotfix is the Medallions. These have been with us since Chapter 5 launched. A replacement for Augments, which meant a small handful of players got completely OP powers every game. They’ve been an addition we all got used to. But in seasons where they’re strong, they’re had a big impact on the gun.
Frequently, most real players in the lobby compete in the limited Medallion POIs. Then once that tussle is over, you just clean up some bots for the rest of the game. Especially in seasons like Chapter 6 Season 4 with very powerful Medallions.

Their uses have adapted over time too. They started as an auto-heal… which was completely over tuned. Then it became a balanced auto-heal. Then, a unique effect like getting wall hacks. It’s continued like this for Chapter, but with fewer Medallions most seasons.
With them removed in this Fortnite Medallions hotfix, it’s finally over. Though, now they’re gone the loudest opinion will probably change from “Medallions too OP” to “I miss Medallions”. The Fortnite hotfix might not be the end forever though.
These kind of huge changes to the meta of the game is going to be disruptive for tournaments. With the FNCS LAN right around the corner, Epic has clarified they’re not making changes to that tournament. So, while the Fortnite Medallions hotfix has removed them… they’re still in tournaments. For at least a few weeks longer.
Until the LAN is over, the Fortnite tournament loot pool is keeping those items! Which means the tournament and pubs loot pool is incredibly different right now. But we’re also getting Ranked in tournament format for a while too.
Ranked being the pubs loot pool instead of tournament has always been strange. This is now the second time Epic has actually brought them in-line though, including the Wrecked season with cars too. The Fortnite Medallions hotfix won’t be applying in these modes for the time being. Although, it’ll likely be back in line in the future too.

Those are the big changes in the Fortnite Medallions hotfix but can they come back? Epic’s patch notes were as vague as ever. Just that the Medallions had been removed.
Given that they were already nerfed once though, it could be that these current Medallions are simply overpowered. Once balanced, they might make a return. But there’s plenty of players who won’t be missing this mechanic. If this Fortnite hotfix is the end for Medallions, the beginning of this season with its crazy mobility boosts combining them was a lot of fun if you were the single player who had them. It would be a nice last hurrah before the Fortnite Medallions hotfix took them away.
The other changes are a bit different. These will likely be sticking around, especially with other new items are coming to the game soon.
