G2 BrokenBlade: “It feels great to win against the LPL… it was on my list for a long, long time”

Following G2’s victory against BLG in what is one of the biggest upsets in recent history, we talked to G2 BrokenBlade, who had just come from a tough MSI performance.

The G2 win at the Esports World Cup might not have the same value as MSI, but it’s still an important milestone and a clear sign that G2 is finally finding their real potential. The European team has looked visibly more confident, and a complete turnaround from less than two weeks ago.

G2 BrokenBlade – The hard work paid off

Congratulations on the win against BLG. I mean… just give me your thoughts.

BrokenBlade: I’m thrilled, you know. It feels great to win against LPL after a long time, especially against Bin. That was something on my list for a long, long time. So I’m very, very happy with today.

Davide: We always said that G2 and BLG are besties at this point, but I feel this time around. the friendship from their side… they probably won’t feel as good. I want to ask you about the series.

In Game 1, you had some struggles—even with strong early game play, it looked like you couldn’t close it out or maintain momentum. What did you guys talk about between Game 1 and Game 2?

BrokenBlade: Basically, we said, ‘Guys, we just lost Nash randomly. We would have won this game.’ So we focused on keeping our mental in check. And we showed it—Game 2 was a very strong performance. Honestly, I think it would have been a 2-0 if we got that Nash. But in a best-of-3 or 5, one single mistake can cost you the game. So we just went with the flow and took it to heart.

Davide: Honestly, that SkewMond flash in the mid lane really scared me, but everything worked out. I want to pivot to MSI.

You faced criticism back then. What did you do specifically to bounce back? Because your current form looks light years ahead of what we saw in Canada.

BrokenBlade: Yeah… at MSI, I just wasn’t feeling great. Mentally, I had very low confidence. I felt like the champions I played didn’t match what we wanted to do. So I went home and told myself, ‘I gotta get this shit done. No excuses.’ The job’s still not done—I want to win this thing, and I’ll give it my all. So far, I’m satisfied with my performance.

Davide: I also want to ask about Sivir. She got buffed in recent patches and you guys were the only team aside from HLE to play her here at EWC.

Don’t give away prep secrets, but… did you guys notice something that might potentially good for the next few matches?

BrokenBlade: Well, Sivir had a good matchup—she was up against a lot of melee champs. It doesn’t take a genius to say Sivir’s good when ricochets bounce off melee champs. So yeah, we just thought it was a good pick in that game.

Next up, you still have to wait on your opponent — Gen.G or FlyQuest. You’ve played both. If you could choose, who would you rather face?

BrokenBlade: Pretty easy answer: we want to face FlyQuest. But if they beat Gen.G, that means they’re strong. So we’ll take them seriously. Last time, FlyQuest beat us 3-0, and Gen.G beat us 3-1. So we’ll watch the games, prep, and be ready for whoever it is.

Last question. You’ve been competing for almost a decade now. What’s one message you wish you could send back to your 2016 self?

BrokenBlade: That’s a great question—I wasn’t ready for it. I’d say: consistency over everything. The amount of work you put in, the time you spend playing, the champions you learn… Back then, I just wanted to play Irelia or Camille only. But being a pro isn’t just about fun. You need to grind and learn the meta champions.

One last message to the fans watching at home or those who came here?

BrokenBlade: A huge thank you to all of you. It was probably tough supporting us during MSI, but that support helped us thrive. I hope we gave you guys a performance you can be proud of.

Davide: Thank you a lot, BB, and hopefully the streak continues!
