A new season has begun, but a lot of players are most excited about another feature that’s not been turned on just yet. Fortnite proximity chat is getting expanded massively. According to leakers, it’s in the works for Battle Royale soon too and will let players trash talk others in the lobby on a new level.

Proximity Chat is a feature that’s risen to popularity lately. Especially in role-play games like GTA Online. Providing a more naturalistic way to interact with people. And when used in PVP games like Fortnite… a whole new level of toxicity. It’s not just for Fortnite Creative maps anymore.
Fortnite games with voice chat might be about to get a whole lot more toxic. What is Fortnite proximity chat and how does it work?
Fortnite Proximity Chat Coming to Battle Royale
According to Fortnite leakers, one major feature has been left out of the C6 S4 update. Proximity chat is supposed to be coming to Fortnite. It’s a feature where players can communicate with anyone in the lobby.
It lets you talk to people close by you on a game map. It has already been used in some Fortnite modes. Although, it hasn’t been applied to PvP modes so far. If activated for Battle Royale, it could open up communication between you and anyone close by.
In practise, this might mean you can spurt trash talk with in the middle of a build fight in Battle Royale. Although, according to leakers, Fortnite proximity chat will need to be turned on. It won’t be on by default. Which should help to avoid some of inevitable trash talk that happens. It does seem like a feature that the main use for is just toxicity.
How Will It Work?

Fortnite proximity chat is already in the game in some form, so we have a god idea about how it works. It’s a similar feature to some other online games. Players can use communication methods like voice chat, but with anyone in the lobby. Instead of only talking to those in your party or on your team, you can communicate with anyone who is close by.
In other games, it works by letting you hear people close to you. As if their voice communications were working like real life, audible to anyone within a set distance. In Battle Royale, it’ll likely mean you can talk to those who very close by on the map. Maybe with some way to activate or deactivate it though, since otherwise it limits party coms. You never know who will be listening in as you discuss your rotation plans. Bush campers might get a lot more useful if players are being careless.
Proximity Chat in Fortnite Creative
Fortnite proximity chat isn’t new to the game. It was originally enabled last year. Although, that update was largely for Creative.
Getting proximity chat for random maps meant more for role play experiences. Players utilize it to recreate more realistic communication. But plenty of players turned it on in combat maps. So players could chat while 1-v-1ing or even practicing builds, and definitely not purely for toxicity. We’ll likely see something similar once Fortnite proximity chat is enabled for Battle Royale too.
