The Thunderpick World Championship saw some excellent Counter-Strike on day one and continued that theme in today’s first match up between defending champions, The Mongolz and FURIA. But now, despite both of the games going the distance, FURIA have locked in their place at the semi finals.
Map one was a hard fight for both teams on Dust 2 with multiple rounds of over time being played before FURIA finally put The Mongolz down. After both teams ended with a 7-5 advantage on their respective T-sides, we had to wade through 10 rounds of over time and in the end, YEKINDAR came out on top with 34 kills.
There are those teams out there whose mental would have been broken by coming so close to a win, but not The Mongolz. They still pushed FURIA almost to another set of over time on in map 2 on Mirage. Yesterday, I actually gave the edge to the Mongolz here and expected them to take the W but FURIA really showed up, played some excellent CS and held it together even when things looked rough.
Now that FURA have landed themselves in the upper semi finals tomorrow, they’ll need to face either Navi or Aurora to get to the grand finals.
Regardless of who they’ll be playing, I would be surprised not to see FURIA go the whole way to the finals. Their performances have been pretty on point and now that they’ve beaten arguably the toughest opponent at this tournament, I’d expect them to be feeling confident.
As for The Mongolz, they’re down but not out. They’ll be heading to the other side of the bracket for the semi finals and may still have their chance for a rematch against FURIA come the grand finals.
