It looks like this development team is effectively shutting down. But what this means for the actual game is still a mystery.

It has been a part of the recent announcements of Pokemon’s future. Alongside a re-release for the gen 1 remakes on the GBA, we’ve seen a few other bits of content confirmed. Like extra Pokemon Unite characters. But the studio closing down does raise questions about Pokemon Unite’s future. This is why some players are asking is Pokemon Unite shutting down right now.
One of the latest studios to get hit by the industries layoffs in TiMi Montréal. This studio has been behind games like Call of Duty mobile, and Pokemon Unite. They’ll be shutting down after a recent change. The studio has been abruptly closed down by NatEase without much explanation.

This is just after a ton of new features got announced for Pokemon Unite. It isn’t clear if this is content that’s already been produced though. The studio has been one of the most influential on the development of Pokemon Unite. Also working on Honor of Kings. They were the largest western studio under NetEase and now closed. Pokemon Unite might be more associated with the Game Freak franchise, but it’s been a game produced by other studios the whole time.
With such a major studio closing down, what does it mean for Pokemon Unite? We haven’t had any official word on Pokemon Unite shutting down.
Instead, the recent Pokemon announcements included new monsters for Unite along with a few quality-of-life improvements and new features like a Solo mode. So it doesn’t look like Unite is shutting down any time soon.
We’ll have to wait and see if someone takes over for TiMi Montréal or if this is the start of a gradual sundowning for the game. A slower ramp down of Pokemon Unite is more likely than the game jus vanishing overnight. There are Unite esports events plnaned, future update content already in the files, it would a while to stop entirely.

We could also see a different studio take over Pokemon Unite. Right now, that’s the most likely outcome. While a studio has been shut down, it doesn’t like Pokemon Unite shutting down is planned too. Until there’s official word about the game’s future, we can probably expect more updates to happen as normal.
Right now, we’re waiting for the three legendary birds to get added to the game. Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos are all currently planned for the title. Along with more modes. There’s esports all through the year too.
A Japanese LAN is coming this week. It’s all leading up to the Pokemon Unite Championship Series Worlds at the end of the year. We’ll see new Pokemon Unite champions crowned then. It doesn’t seem like Pokemon Unite shutting down is planned right now.
