After the defeat against Karmine Corp (1-3) this Sunday in the LEC Spring Playoffs, Team Heretics are officially out of the title race until Summer. We had the opportunity to chat with Kamil “Kamiloo” Haudegond, the young midlaner who made the leap from the French second division directly to the LEC (the first ever to get promoted from ERL2 to Tier 1 in Europe). We talked about the series and the preparation, Team Heretics’ progress this year, his individual performances, the upcoming offseason, and TH’s ambitions for Summer.

TH Kamiloo: “The project is going as it should”

Ethan: Games were a bit complicated today. You still took a game from the Winter champions, though.

How do you feel after today, and what’s next for you guys?

Kamiloo: I’m a little disappointed because I think we could’ve done better. But these things happen. We didn’t do better, it happens. As for what’s next, I think that overall, as a team, we’re going to take vacations. And after that, we’ll come back stronger for the summer.

Ethan: On paper, everything leads us to believe that you have drawn the worst team from the top 4 because they are the Winter champions, and they finished first in the regular season.

Do you think that against another top 4 team it could have gone well, or that in any case it was complicated to reach them in Spring?

Kamiloo: I think that [with] all the teams in the top 4 it was going to be complicated. But I think they were the ones we wanted to play the most, because they were the ones against whom we had the closest BO in the regular [season]. And even playing against KC is always something … I don’t know how to put it, but it’s always interesting.

Ethan: I was also wondering how these three weeks of practice went for you, since we know that the top 3-4 scrim a lot between them, and that four other teams are already on vacation.

Were you still able to scrim against strong opponents during your preparation?

Kamiloo: Overall, we only scrimmed LEC. All year round, we only scrim LEC. And the only times we scrim ERL, apart from very exceptional cases, was our academy.

Ethan: And what about those past three weeks?

Kamiloo: We had a lot of scrims against GX, for example. Before today’s game, we played Fnatic and G2. Overall, we still had some good scrims. I think we had weeks of practice that were really good for us. But hey, it wasn’t enough.

Ethan: I talked to Stend (Paul Lardin) earlier this season, who told me that you didn’t really have a goal in Winter and that, on the other hand, this Spring you were aiming higher, at least the qualification for playoffs.

Despite the defeat today, you still achieved what you were aiming for, right? Speaking as a team, are you proud of your progress and your journey this Spring?

Kamiloo: We haven’t talked about it as a team yet, but I’m personally proud of us because I think that we are progressing, and that’s something I haven’t often seen in LoL. I’m actually very proud of the team.

Indeed, our goal was to qualify for the playoffs, but I think that with our current level we could have done more.

Not that we should have, but we could have potentially. But it didn’t happen, so it will stay like that, and the goal has still been achieved.

Are you equally proud of yourself? Do you feel that you have enough room for improvement to reach the top midlaners by the end of the year?

Kamiloo: Yes, definitely. For example, today my game 1 was a bit of silly mistakes that I still make. In the sense that I did not play safe in lane which led to me dying from a gank. Overall, in games 2, 3 and 4, I’m not unhappy with what I did. I think I held my ground pretty well. There was just game 1 which was quite disastrous. But I think that in the summer, I could contest this top.

If there is one aspect of your game where you think you’ve made a lot of progress on and another where you think you need to focus on for summer, what would it be?

Kamiloo: It’s hard to say, I think that overall I progressed a lot on side lanes. But I think I will have to improve even more because today I made 2 or 3 mistakes that can cost you at times. So yes, just the sides for both, I think.

Ethan: We’re entering a pretty decisive off-season, a lot of teams are already making changes to give themselves a better chance of performing in Summer and getting a spot at Worlds.

Don’t you have fear that you or even one of your teammates will be the victim of one of these changes?

Kamiloo: No, it’s been very clear since the beginning of the year.

There will be no changes unless someone stops working or does something crazy. But for the moment, the project is going as it should.

And as a result, there will be nothing [changed].

Do you have a little message for the fans to wrap it up?

Kamiloo: Thank you for supporting us, even if today we couldn’t push forward. But we’ll see you this summer for a potential Worlds qualification.

Is TH’s goal for this summer to reach Worlds?

Kamiloo: Yes, of course. I think it’s going to be tough ,but that’s the goal.

Who’s with Kamiloo

Who is the best player in the world right now?

Kamiloo: I would probably say Chovy.

Who is the GOAT, except Faker?

Kamiloo: Without Faker, it’s hard to say. I like Smeb a lot, but maybe he didn’t play enough. I would still say Smeb, I think he was very strong in his prime.

Who is your favorite champion?

Kamiloo: Fizz and Sylas. It’s a bit difficult to separate them.

Who was your favourite teammate, excluding your current roster?

Kamiloo: CRoNiiK. He was my jungler back in LFL2. For 2 years, he was one of the best teammate I could have.

Who is the toughest player you’ve ever played against?

Kamiloo: Probably Caps.

Who is the most broken champion in the game right now?

Kamiloo: It’s hard to say, there are so many things that are broken. I’d say Gwen is a bit disgusting.

Who will win the split?

Kamiloo: It’s hard to say too. I think that all the teams in the top 4 could win it. I would say that MKOI and Fnatic are less likely. I would say KC or G2? I would actually say KC. I think G2 isn’t going to play for so much time. While KC has the loser bracket buff.
