Now that Patch 25.17 is officially on the live servers, here is our preview of the next update of the game, Patch 25.18.
Patch 25.17 has gone live on August 27 and while it wasn’t a big update, especially compared to the previous one, it still came with several interesting changes. There have been some buffs to less popular champions such as Kassadin and Morgana, as well as some jungle-clearing buffs to champions like Vayne and Sett.
While we wait to see how the meta shifts with the new patch, there are big things coming to the game in the next patch. Riot Games is finally releasing the long-awaited T1 Worlds skins from 2024 and they look quite different from the previous Worlds skins. Each player got to choose one champion, with Faker also receiving a Prestige skin after winning the Finals MVP award.
Riot Phroxzon has detailed the preview for the upcoming patch, confirming that the Worlds patch will be on Patch 25.20.
For the next update, the main changes are coming the mid lane meta, with a lot of nerfs to some of the most popular picks that have defined pro play meta, such as Annie, Azir, Aurora, and Galio. The goal is to reduce their damage output as these champions have often been quite tanky with no major tradeoffs in their build path.
Cassiopeia, Hwei, and Vel’Koz, on the other hand, have received some interesting nerfs that might push them back into relevance, especially the first two, who can punish the shorter range mids.
Additionally, there are some interesting nerfs to Qiyana, Sylas, and Volibear. All three champions have been performing well as junglers, with Qiyana dominating solo queue in the mid lane as well. While Riot stated they are happy about their return to power, they are “taking some of the power out”.
Aside from those, the other highlights of the patch are Illaoi, who is getting a longer vessel duration and slightly decreased damage, and Jayce, who is getting an additional 20 damage on his Q at level one.
Below you can find the full list of number changes.
While there is no standout champion change aside from Yunara, which should affect both professional and normal ranked play, the main shift will happen in the mid lane meta.
All the mid lane mages that have dominated pro play are going to be weaker going forward, potentially making space for more burst damage-focused mid lane champions. While some champions will still be picked for the value they offer, we might pick other control mages, such as Syndra and Orianna, more often.
I’m interested to see how the Jayce change will affect the top lane meta. The additional early damage might make his laning phase more oppressive and that could be something pros, especially Chinese and Korean players, will want to abuse.
