With the League of Legends World Championship returning to action today with the Swiss stage, G2 Esports has locked a quarterfinal spot after reverse sweeping FlyQuest in the best-of-three series, bringing the LEC back into a guaranteed top eight finish after three long years.
After defeating BiliBili Gaming and fellow European team Movistar KOI, G2 were drawn against FlyQuest at the end of last week, igniting the EU-NA rivarly in what was a key series for both teams.
The two squads also ended up dodging several other strong opponents, including the top two LCK seeds Gen.G Esports and Hanwha Life Esports, as well as LCP’s #1 seed CFO, who had previously taken down T1 in the previous rounds.
Winning the series would not only mean advancing to the next stage in Shanghai, but also guaranteeing itself a good draw in the quarterfinals, having a 3-1 record.
It was a tough series for G2 at the start and it made it clear that the series would come to drafting. FlyQuest found a comfortable team composition with Wukong-Taliyah, followed up by Corki for great AoE, poke and pick potential.
G2 tried to counter FLY’s team composition by going for a Caitlyn-Bard bot lane and putting SkewMond on Maokai to neutralize Inspired. While the idea was great on paper, the execution was much more lacking. Caitlyn and Bard wasn’t really able to push a substantial lead and with the lower skirmishing potential by G2’s team composition, which had a scaling Viktor in the mid lane, still allowed FlyQuest to gain control of the game in the mid game.
Even though G2 tried to slow down the game by picking up early drakes, FLY had built too strong of a lead and closed out the game in 38 minutes.

In the second game, G2 went for a strong early game comp with the Aurora-Galio-Trundle top lane trio, with the primary goal of shutting down FLY’s top side. While the LTA seed found a great Soraka angle to make up for the team’s lack of front line, G2 did a great job at punishing Bwipo and Quad with repeated ganks and rotations to close out the game before Soraka could really gain control of the teamfights with her healing.
With one win each, the third game started ot put the coach’s drafting to the test. FlyQuest first picked Azir and followed it up with a traditional front to back comp with Jhin as a secondary carry. G2, on the other hand, went for Orianna and also brought back Dr. Mundo in the jungle to counter Sejuani and also beef up its frontline. With Jax in the top lane and Rell as the support, G2 found themselves with several engage tools to initiate the fights.
The early game went in FLY’s favor, taking advantage of the strong synergy between Renekton and Sejuani. That said, G2 Esports kept the disadvantage small, waiting for Orianna and Varus to scale up. The turning point arrived at the 20-minute mark, when the LEC squad found a winning teamfight at the Atakhan.

While that should’ve been the game decider, G2 still had hiccups here and there, giving FLY some opportunities for come back, including a two Baron pickups. That being said, the North American team only had Quad’s Azir as the win condition, and with Caps finding several multi-man shockwaves in the game, G2 were able to find one last successful teamfight to push through the base and take down the nexus.
The victory not only gives Europe more hope heading into the next phase of the championship, but also revenges the poor showing from G2 at the Mid-Season Invitational.
The team has had a steady growth since then and is now looking more and more convincing. Even though the gameplay is not the cleanest, G2 is trying to utilize their own strength and being innovative in their meta read, maximizing the rules around Fearless Draft.
For FlyQuest, there will be one more chance in the 2-2 Swiss stage bracket. It won’t be an easy ride, however, as several strong teams are expected to be there with them. CFO are confirmed to join them, alongside the loser between Gen.G and Top Esports, as well as the winners between MKOI and TSW, T1 and 100T, and BLG and VKS.
