Prior to the start of the Swiss stage at Worlds, we snatched a few minutes with G2 Caps to talk about Worlds preparation and the expectations from this year’s run.

Davide: How are you doing, man? This is not obviously your first time here in China.
Caps: We have been here a few times. I think this is my third time… actually, no, it’s my fourth time. It’s been many times and it’s always been a lot of fun whenever we come to China.
I think the esports scene is very big and we meet so many fans that are all passionate about the game so that’s very cool to see. This time we’re staying in an esports hotel, which seems very fun. It’s like so different from Europe.
I can’t really imagine because esports and League of Legends is so big. So it’s been super fun. And in terms of food, I think my favourite Chinese food is the Peking duck.
Davide: Did you try it?
Caps: We tried this time as well, but it’s something that tried [for the] first time in 2020 when I was here. BrokenBladeg also tried it. He was on a different team at the time, but he also tried it and since then we’re always talking about the Peking Duck. We finally came back and we could try it again and it was very good.
Our fans in China are cracked 😎

Davide: Let’s move over to Worlds. I know you can’t really leak out stuff from scrims and stuff, but
Caps: I think we are coming off a good start. In terms of preparation, I think we got over jet lag quite fast, we’ve been here early.
We have had some decent scrims. Of course, there’s also been some tough series for us and there’s been a lot of things that we need to learn and we need to pick up.
But I think everyone’s been quite reasonable and we’ve all been quite logical about what we need to do and everyone really wants to win here at Worlds, so I’m just super excited about getting to play on stage. We’re definitely going to aim to get out of groups this time and finally get the Worlds Trophy as well.
Davide: G2 didn’t really get to where you probably would have expected to in the past two years but we still saw quite a pretty good G2 that was able to often go against strong Eastern teams.
Caps: We learned a lot from it. We did some big changes at the start of the year here with both SkewMond and Labrov joining, which kind of shook up a lot of things we learned because suddenly we had to unlearn some stuff and we had to learn some new things with the new guys joining.
Of course, Riot would always be changing the patch, there’s some new stuff you have to learn. But I think for us, the biggest learnings we took were from the MSI because we got super stomped and it was very tough for us. At the end of the tournament we came to some very good realizations and conclusions. Since then, it’s been like a big game changer for us. I feel like we just learned so much at both MSI and EWC but also the Summer split, we’ve been just doing a lot better and it feels more comfortable to play with each other.
We have a way to go because we still have some things we are not like on the same page on but it’s much better than it was at MSI so I definitely think we will have a stronger performance than MSI. Of course, in esports, you can never guarantee anything, right? But I know we will come in a lot stronger than MSI, assuming everyone didn’t improve even more. We’ll definitely win some games.
Davide: Speaking of changes, you had a new jungler and support. I wanted to highlight Skewmond’s presence in the team because we’ve seen how Jungle-mid duos have been a core element for the strongest teams across all regions.
Caps: I mean, there’s definitely a lot of very strong mid jungle duos. The first one that comes to mind for me right now is Chovy-Canyon, just because they’ve been looking unstoppable this year and even last year they were also very tough to deal with. That’s always a tough matchup. Aside from that, I think you can never count out Faker, especially at Worlds.
So Faker and Oner are another combo that would be very scary for anyone to go up against. I think it’s kind of funny with the Shadow joining BLG: they have the trio with Knight and Beichuan. That’s kind of a fun dynamic because [it] can change up a lot during the games. I think if you’re at Worlds, you probably have a pretty solid mid-jungle for the most part. So any matchup we’ll go up against will need to be on the lookout.
Davide: Speaking of T1, I need you to give me a prediction on the first series that we get here at Worlds, which is IG-T1.
Caps: I think I said 3-1 to T1 earlier today, so probably I’ll keep with the same one.
You can never really count out Faker from Worlds. He just always delivers and I think sometimes they’ve been a little bit slow at the start; that’s the only worrying part for me. And especially with the best of five right out the gate, it could be a little bit scary, but I still believe in him, I guess.
It’s a bit of a shame for me because I think I would also really love to play against IG because [I would be] playing against Rookie and TheShy. It’s been so many years since I played against them, last time was season 8, so I would have loved to play against them again. It’s kind of fun to have these matchups, you know, play against someone for seven years and then going up against them again. But I think T1 will win.
Davide: One question that’s not really related to Worlds, but it’s still quite relevant for the LEC. There have been the news about we having two more teams next year in the LEC with presumably Los Ratones and the EMEA Masters Summer Champions.
Caps: I’m not sure too familiar with it, to be honest. I know people are talking about it a bit, but I’m not too familiar with it. I think playing in tournaments would probably be fun. It depends as well on the roster. But I would love to play a competitive match against TheBaus. I think that would be very fun so if that’s what it takes to play against them, that would be fun.
Aside from that, I think more teams can be nice, it can also be bad, it all depends on the execution. So I think if Riot does a good job of the format and everything, then I’m just excited. I’m hoping for the best.
Caps: I think [it would be] the same ones I mentioned before. i think if I had to choose one, it would probably be probably Chovy. He’s been playing insane this year and I think it’ll be fun to play against him.
Caps: A big shout out to all the fans, it’s been insane every time we go to these international tournaments and there’s these big events to see how many fans there are and how passionate everyone is.
I always enjoy it and it just makes me even more passionate and feel even better about the game, so it’s really important. I really appreciate it and really want to make you guys proud as well because we haven’t been doing that great the last few years in terms of the Worlds performances. But this time around, it will be different and we will go straight to quarters.
