They’ve kept us in suspense for a full week but now the final 4 teams at the Thunderpick World Championship have arrived in Berlin. Three of the four teams topped their groups coming into this stage of the tournament and with $770,000 left in the prize pool, there’s everything to play for.
I’m not actually sure how much notice OG had that they’d be playing in the Thunderpick World Championship but it really can’t have been much. Up until the night before the groups started, BLEED were still on the teams line up so it can’t have been much. The pew pew boys have really had a rough go of it in CS and haven’t replicated the success of their Dota roster. After a couple of 7th-8th place finishes last year, we haven’t seen much of them in S Tier tournaments.
But having said all that, they’ve reached some impressive heights this tournament. BIG are going to be licking their wounds for some time after that crushing 13-1 defeat on Ancient in the quarterfinals. OG have got nothing to lose and seeing them go all the way would do my heart good.
In order to do that though, they’re going to have to take on Heroic. This team hasn’t exactly had the hardest journey to the semi finals but they’ve played well nonetheless, knocking out NIP, Legacy and Fnatic in the process. Perhaps OG are next up on the chopping block. If they are, I’ll be one step closer to getting my predictions correct.
The first two teams going head to head at LVL in Berlin will be 3DMAX and The MongolZ. This is the one I’m having a harder time predicting and honestly, it really could go either way. They both came out on top of their groups with identical score lines: 2-0 (52-40).
Even their playoff scores are remarkably similar with 3DMAX taking out BESTIA and The MongolZ defeating Imperial Esports in 2-1 series. It may even come down to the veto. We’ve seen them both win on Inferno but apart from that, they haven’t faced each other this tournament and have played on different maps.
But that’s what makes CS so exciting right? With an audience in the venue too, the Thunderpick World Championship live event is going to be off to a flying start.
