The Thunderpick World Championship hasn’t exactly gone to plan for some teams, which makes things all the spicier for us. The groups and quarterfinals have wrapped up and 12 of the 16 have already been eliminated, including Team Falcons and s1mple, who lost both of their group stage games. So now the field is open for the Thunderpick World Championship playoffs, who’s going to win?

1. Heroic

Heroic are fresh off their 3-4th place finish at IEM Rio and while they couldn’t stop Aleksib taking his first IEM trophy, it really wasn’t too much for them to stop Ninjas in Pyjamas and Legacy in their tracks. I think it’ll be a while before the NIP fans forget that 13-2 on Dust 2.
The quarterfinals match up was against Fnatic and was the only 2-0 of the series at that stage of the tournament. Which kinda speaks for itself really.
2. The MongolZ
The MongolZ roster has been together for well over a year now and have found their synergy. They’re one of those teams that we’ll always see at the middle to bottom of tables at events like IEM Rio and the Esports World Cup but this is a different kettle of fish.
Imperial did manage to force overtime on Dust 2 in the quarterfinals round but that was about it. Otherwise, The MongolZ showed them what they’re made of on Mirage and Inferno. I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for this lineup, watching them go to the grand finals would be something else.
3. 3DMAX

I’m not going to say 3DMAX have had an easy ride to the Thunderpick World Championship playoffs. Definitely no one was thinking that when they got placed into the group with Falcons. But after they took them down on day 1, it’s been plain sailing for this roster so far.
I’m putting them in third place here simply because they’ve got to go up against The MongolZ next and things about to get significant more difficult. They’ve got plenty of time to figure out the strategy before November 2nd but they may have finally met their match.
4. OG
Nobody even knew OG were going to join this tournament until a few days ago and as much as it pains me to say, they don’t exactly have a good track record. I’m pleasantly surprised to see them make it this far, especially now that the likes of Heavygod moved onto Cloud9.
They’ve gone a long way towards redeeming themselves this at the Thunderpick WC after taking down Virtus.Pro and BIG. But can they beat Heroic? I doubt it.
There’s a long week to wait before the finals weekend for the Thunderpick World Championship descends on LVL in Berlin. The weekend will play out with 2 semi finals games on Saturday November 2nd and a 3rd place match followed by the Bo5 grand finals on Sunday 3rd.
If you can’t make it to Berlin, you can watch all the action on Twitch.
