When getting into the skins community, CS2 wear ratings can be quite confusing. In short, float and wear rating in CS2 is a system used to determine how damaged skins are when they’re unboxed from cases. This decides what they look like in-game, and can result in the value varying massively from one CS2 wear rating to another, even for the same skin. If you find yourself wondering, “How does CS2 wear rating work?” then this guide should hold all the answers you’re seeking.

CS2 Wear Ratings and Float Guide: Full Scale in Order

All CS2 wear ratings in order

To start out, let’s take a quick look at every CS2 wear rating in order. There are five levels of wear ratings in total, which are as follows:

  • Factory New (0.00-0.07)
  • Minimal Wear (0.07-0.15)
  • Field-Tested (0.15-0.37)
  • Well-Worn (0.37-0.44)
  • Battle-Scarred (0.44-1.00)

The lower the number, the better, and the less visual wear a skin will have. It’s a way for the game to know what the skin should look like. CS2 wear ratings are pretty simple when you put them like that. It’s important to know the CS2 float of a skin you’re buying and selling, as this usually affects the price in a big way. Don’t undersell your skins!

Next, I’ll take you through every CS2 wear rating explained in detail, giving you a better idea of what each one actually means for how your CS2 skins will look in-game.

Factory New

  • CS2 wear ratings between 0.00-0.07

Factory New CS2 skins are as clean as they come. They’re the best CS2 float you can get, which usually makes them some of the most expensive skins you can buy in the game. This is especially true for block color skins, like the USP-S Whiteout, where any wear on the skin ruins the aesthetic. If you get a skin in a CS2 case with Factory New wear rating, you’re very lucky.

Minimal Wear

  • CS2 wear ratings between 0.07-0.15

Minimal Wear is slightly worse than Factory New. However, it’s still close to perfect, and in most instances, you won’t be able to tell the difference. If you’re looking for the perfect skin but don’t want to break the bank, going for Minimal Wear CS2 wear rating could be perfect for what you’re looking for.

Field-Tested

AK-47 Midnight Laminate Field-Tested (CS2 Wear Rating 0.30)

  • CS2 wear ratings between 0.15-0.37

Field-Tested is where you can really start to notice the difference in CS2 floats. It’s such a wide range, that you’ll find lots of Counter-Strike skins fall into the Field-Tested bracket. If you’re shopping for skins on a budget, then Field-Tested wear rating is where the price often comes down considerably, too.

Well-Worn

AK-47 Midnight Laminate Well-Worn (CS2 Wear Rating 0.40)

  • CS2 wear ratings between 0.37-0.44

Skins with a Well-Worn CS2 float fall between 0.37 and 0.44, and are good if you really want a battle-hardened look. Many even prefer this, not opting to go for the brand-new look offered by higher CS2 wear ratings. They’re usually the cheapest CS2 skins, too.

Battle-Scarred

AK-47 Midnight Laminate Battle-Scarred (CS2 Wear Rating 0.55)

  • CS2 wear rating between 0.44-1.00

Battle-Scarred CS2 skins are just completely worn down, and usually unrecognizable from their Factory New variants. In most cases, these are the cheapest versions of their respective skins. However, there are some exceptions, such as the Asiimov skins, where Battle-Scarred creates a unique look by itself, leading to more popularity in the CS2 skins community.

How to check CS2 skin wear rating

If you’re buying or selling CS2 skins, you need to know the float. This will give you a rough idea of the price you’ll be able to sell your item for, given that it varies so much between skins.

To do this, inspect the item in your CS2 inventory, and hover over the small “I” icon at the bottom of the screen. Here, there are two things you want to look out for – the “Wear Rating” number, which you can match up with the numbers and wear rating categories above, as well as the “Exterior” value. This straight-up tells you the CS2 wear ratings of your items.

How to check CS2 Wear Ratings

You can then check the price of the item on the Steam Marketplace (or any other CS2 market, for that matter). If you’re selling the CS2 skin, then use the wear rating you found a moment ago as a guide. If you’re buying an item and want to find the CS2 float, you can head to the Steam Marketplace and press “Inspect in Game” on the exact item you’re planning to buy. Each float is unique, so you must make sure you inspect the correct item.

Can CS2 wear ratings change with use?

No. CS2 wear ratings are determined when a skin is unboxed from a case, and will not change from that. For example, a Factory New skin will always be Factory New, even if you use it in thousands of matches – wear rating never deteriorates. It makes sense that some new CS2 players might not be aware of this, and hold back on using their good skins as a result. Don’t worry about this.

Do CS2 knives and gloves have wear rating?

Yes. Just like gun skins, CS2 knives and gloves have their own wear ratings that impact their appearance and price. There are certain items that don’t have a wear rating, such as charms and Agents.
