The very first Rainbow Six game was released in 1998, to coincide with the release of author Tom Clancy's book of the same name. The original game, and the following in the series, followed an international counter-terrorist team called Rainbow. The original Rainbow Six was a commercial and critical success, spawning a series that has stretched over 20 years and 22 titles.
Though there were competitions in previous R6 titles, the series exploded onto the esports scene with the release of Rainbow Six Siege in 2015. Siege was created with esports in mind, leading to a class-based first-person shooter. Each game consists of two teams of five competing against one another, with one as the offense and one as the defense. With both teams eventually switching.
