League of Legends is one of the most popular online multiplayer games in the world. This game has captured the hearts and attention of millions around the globe, and not just through the game itself. Whether you’ve become aware of League’s presence due to its ever-growing esports scene with the likes of LoL Worlds or the popularity of the series Arcane, you may be wondering: Should you play League of Legends in 2025?
League of Legends is a video game developed by Riot Games that was released in 2009. It has been continuously updated to this day and has amassed a registered player count in the nine digits. LoL is a MOBA, or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena style of game, where teams of 5 players are matched and fight in a virtual battlefield to fight against eachother.
LoL uses a third person perspective so you can see the character, or Champion, you’re controlling. You move by clicking your mouse and use abilities with your keyboard keys, making it much different than first-person shooter type games. It can be a bit jarring at first, but the controls are simple and easy to get used to.
Every Champion you play has a different set of abilities or spells that work with their team to give them an advantage.
The goal of League of Legends is to destroy the enemy’s “Nexus.” This is the big crystal structure in the center of their base. To do this, players must work together to defeat enemy Champions and tear down their defenses.

Of course, there are many different variables at play that make it easier or more difficult to accomplish this goal, but talking about all of them would be beyond the scope of this post. Just know that while the central idea behind League of Legends’ gameplay is simple, the depth of the game is vast and takes a long time to master. But that’s all part of the fun, right?
League of Legends is a very complicated game that takes ages to be good at. It tries to balance individuality with team-centric play.
There are over 160 unique Champions in LoL the game for players to choose from, so you should find at least one that you like. The range of characters is wide, from classic fantasy archers and swordsmen, to pop idols and mermaids, to hulking lovecraftian beasts and magical cats. There really haven’t skimped on the designs!
When in game, each Champion gets to level up their abilities and buy items to make them more powerful. As your Champion gets stronger, it gets easier to fulfill their gameplay power fantasies and win the game.
Every champion does something different. Some are 1v1 extraordinaires, some can demolish the entire enemy team in the right circumstances, and some are the reason why those circumstances come about in the first place.
While the potential of your individual Champion grows as the game goes on, that potential is increased exponentially when the team is playing as together one. For example, some Champions can stun the whole enemy team for a moment, but don’t have much damage by themselves. When combined with Champions that can do tons of damage, the result is pure carnage.
That’s where the fun of League of Legends really comes from, pulling off that teamfight that wins you the game is almost addictive fun.
We’ve really sang its praises so far but League of Legends is not a perfect game. Though there are so many Champions in the game to choose from, it can be difficult to get them, or at least a larger amount of them early on due to the way Riot wants you to unlock them.
Unlike other MOBAs like Dota 2 that let you play all heroes from minute one, you need to play more and more League to get enough points to unlock new Champions. As you play more, you’ll get more Champions, but you should make sure that you really want to play a Champion before using your points to get them.
Due to the nature of MOBA games, the enemy’s goal is also to get stronger over the course of the game. Sometimes, the enemy may get so strong by defeating your teammates that it can feel like you didn’t get a chance to impact the game. While this scenario may happen less often than people say it does, you tend to remember the feeling of helplessness in games like that.
And of course, while League of Legends may be simple in essence, the depth of the game makes it difficult for new players to get fully acclimated.
After all, those 160+ Champions could be on the other team. It’s hard to play against them if you don’t know what they do. Add on the fact that there are a ton of items in League of Legends that can be built by your Champion, and you’ve got some serious potential for information overload.

League of Legends is one of the most popular games in the world for a reason. While the learning curve may be steep and losses can be frustrating, the feeling of coming together as a team and seeing your Champions crush the enemies makes it worth it.
I recommend that you give League of Legends a try. If you have friends who are also thinking the same thing, try it together. Just focus on learning the basics, finding a Champion or two that you like, and picking up on the details piece by piece.
And stay up to date on all the latest trends in esports
