We spoke to our fourth MKOI player of MSI, David “Supa” Martinez Garcia, after the team suffered the latest in a series of ‘close-but-no-cigar’ 3-1 matches which nearly hit Silver Scrapes.
Transparently, the MKOI interviews I’ve had so far have convinced me that this team’s internal environment is as laid-back, friendly, and humorous as a Normals Queue 5-stack on a Saturday night. Except these five are competing on the World’s largest stage. After a tough loss to BLG, the team’s positivity and personality shone through, despite their disappointment at the result and their hunger for more.
Nick James: We’re coming off of, I’ll be honest, a little bit of a heartbreaker of a series against BLG.
Supa: I think we are a pretty strong team when it comes to fighting and playing as a team. So, I think what we lacked in game one was that. What we [brought] really well in game one was that we worked together, we were fighting more close, waiting for each other. And the series kinda rested on who kind of fights better, in this metagame.
Nick: Honestly, you guys looked really good in that last game too. The sad flipside of it, what went wrong in the other games.
Supa: I think they did pretty [good] things. They got info level one first game into an invade and tried to snowball through that. We f-cked up some fights but they did very well in fights as well. I think they pulled us into tough positions. You don’t get much practice outside of Asian teams in this kind of situation. They did pretty well and I think we will learn from that. I think we [lost] the game four by our mistakes. It’s fine, [it] can happen. But I think no one would be surprised if it was a game five.
I think we did pretty well game one and three, we never gave up. We actually could win game one and three by moments, it’s League of Legends. It was a really fun series.
Nick: I’ve been chatting to your teammates a little bit, I was talking to Myrwn and I discovered this guy loves the PvE game modes, like loves them. Did you know he didn’t play any solo queue when Swarm was out, and he grinded all the way to the top achievement to unlock everything? Were you aware?
Supa: Of course, he was giving us tips to improve.
Nick: So Myrwn’s just in the MKOI chat being like ‘you guys, Leona is busted if you pick area of effect size”?
Supa: Yeah, I mean he likes…he needs to be happy at the end. I’ll give a tip: if you’re happy, doing what you like, you’ll perform better. Doesn’t matter if he plays 50 solo queues, if, when we are training, when we are in official, if he is happy, he will perform his best.
Nick: Did you play Swarm? Do you play alternate game modes? What do you think of Swarm?
Supa: Yeah, I played, but not much, not much. Odyssey, that game I spammed a lot.
Nick: So Myrwn spams Swarm, you spam Odyssey, tell me about your time with Odyssey, why you loved it so much.
Supa: Honestly, I dunno, I feel like you had so many challenges, it was so fun in this specific time. No one…they’d never created something similar. It’s like playing League of Legends but in another game.
Nick: Yeah, it’s like playing a league, like, MMO boss fight. That Kayn fight where he’d scatter out across the map and then fly back in?
Supa: I would love if they created a game mode like this, forever.

Supa: I mean, I didn’t play Star Guardian. I dunno why, I dunno, probably I was playing solo queue. I remember, but I don’t remember much of the game. But Odyseey is like, top one, because I played and had so much fun. Then Swarm was fine, but it was not the same.
Nick: Next, I’ll leave the camera to you – MKOI has been loving the content.
Supa: I mean, first, thank you very much. I hope you enjoyed today’s series because we actually tried our best. We f-f-ck up, I think the series could change by details, by moments. We will improve a lot. The tournament is still [going], we have another chance, I think we still have the chance to win MSI.
Nick: Thanks so much, Supa. Sorry the series didn’t go your way today, man, but I’m really hopeful that you guys will go far this tournament.
