With the eight teams locked in for the MSI Bracket Stage, we had the chance to chat with MKOI Myrwn about his time in Canada so far, his thoughts on some teams at the tournament, and his love for PvE game modes.
Nick: How long have you been in Vancouver? Have you gotten to do anything fun and what do you think of the city?
Myrwn: Only two days. Only two days. This is my second day, so not a lot of time. So I would say for now, it’s really good. We’ve been in Toronto for some days. So for now, my experience in Canada has been really good. I went this morning for a walk around the hotel, so it was actually super beautiful. I mean, before coming here, when I was ready in Toronto, I looked up on YouTube, Vancouver, like walk, you know, like a route or whatever, and it looked really cool.
Nick: Yeah, there are some really nice walks here. Have you noticed Jojo’s power level rise now that he’s back in Canada? Now that he’s sleeping in an igloo again? Do you feel like he’s gotten better now that he’s on home turf?
Myrwn: I mean, surely, I think since he knew that MSI was going to be in Canada, he has been playing way better. You can see in LEC, you know, first.
Nick: So that’s what he needed, he needed to know it was he could go home.
Myrwn: First split was in Korea, he didn’t try hard; now in Canada for sure he does. So yeah, I mean for sure he’s tryharding more now.
Nick: OK, so we need to get Worlds in Canada as well, all right? And then you guys have got it. NAmen did a podcast with CFO Driver just today and he was saying that you’ve left a really strong impression on him. You’re in similar enough time zones that he actually watches you play and he thinks you’re very good. He doesn’t want to play against you ’cause he doesn’t think he can answer your pocket picks.
Myrwn: I mean, I saw him in first stand mostly. So yeah, I think he’s really good. Both top laners, I think they are really good. And I got surprised at First Stand. I think as a team, they are really good, all of them. So yeah, I think I hope to face them. It’s going to be cool for sure. And they understand that he doesn’t want to face pocket picks, I agree. They are disgusting. I can imagine someone doesn’t want to face Varus top when you are blinding like some champs…
Nick: Maokai or something?
Myrwn: Yeah, I can. I can understand. It’s annoying, sure.
Nick: So you don’t have to tell us what they are, ’cause obviously you want to keep it secret.
Myrwn: Surely every international, every LEC week, there’s something new to try and cook.
Nick: I know you’ve only been here for two days. Have you had a chance to see some of the games that have been going on in the play-ins stage?
Myrwn: Not much. I saw a bit of G2-Bilibili yesterday. It was a stomp. The problem is I couldn’t really see because we’re flying. So we lost the G2-Furia, we lost all of them. And then we were going to the hotel and everything, so we couldn’t see GAM-Bilibili, the second best of five. Yesterday, we couldn’t see because we’re scrimming all day basically. I didn’t get to see the games, only a bit of them. So yeah, [I] cannot tell you a lot about it.
Nick: I was interested talking about FURIA pulling out some interesting pocket pecks they had. As a master of pocket picks I figured you might have some opinions. They did it twice in their regular split and playoffs and then once here, where they go Yasuo plus like Rakan or Alistar.
Myrwn: I mean, honestly, I think Ayu, I remember him from last year. I remember he was crazy good on the Bel’Veth when he was in Europe, I think. Yeah, I think he was actually really good, he was super high, you know? I think he’s he’s really good. All the team in FURIA has surprised me a lot. I think they’re a really good team and I’m surprised they’re actually out this early in the tournament. Like they’re the first team to be out, I expected them to actually maybe even go out (advance), seeing from scrims how other teams were doing and how they were doing.
Nick: I heard they were doing very good in scrims and certainly in that first series against G2, I thought they were gonna win. The next couple of questions have nothing to do with pro play. They’re just for fun. Have you had a chance to watch Arcane? Yeah. All right. Awesome. So Riot has announced, you know, there will be another show animated by Fortiche. It’ll be about new champions, a new region.
Myrwn: I would Ixtal.
Nick: That’s the first Ixtal I’ve gotten.
Myrwn: I mean, I love Neeko, Qiyana too. Elyoya, is his main is Qiyana, also for him. But I would say I would say Neeko’s my favourite champ and Zeri would be the second. But we already have Arcane, so..
Nick: Yeah, sadly, we didn’t get Zeri in Arcane. She was referenced in that mini-game that was in the client for Arcane. The other question is, Riot has been doing these themed seasons this year and that’s their plan for the future is 3 times a year, Summoners’ Rift gets updated, we get a bunch of skins that are based on whatever the season’s theme is about. Again,
Myrwn: I will have to probably look up but the first choice would be Star Guardian. I hope they bring back the PvE mode. That was the best thing ever, same with swarm. I think PvE mode is the best thing the league has ever done. So please bring back the PvE.
Nick: Let’s talk about that. So you are a big PvE enjoyer. So the three PvE experiences that I can think of were Star Guardian, the Odyssey mode, and Swarm.
Myrwn: I mean from my experience, I was in school when Star Guardian got released and I was like perma spamming it, to reach the highest point you like S+and [if] you beat it, you get an icon. I have that icon. It was super tryhard and I would say that’s my top one. Then top 2, Swarm, last year, I wasn’t maybe the most discipline. Instead of playing solo queue, I was playing my little Swarm. I got the Max level of everything, every upgrade. I was so obsessed with the game and then Odyssey, it’s a really good one. I like the augments and everything. I think Yasuo and Malphite going from world to world, the 300 tornadoes of Yasuo were super good experience. The three of them were really good. And also, the game mode of Dark Star Thresh. Do you remember the one that you had? They should bring back all of them.
Nick: That Thresh mode was awesome. There was nothing quite like getting somebody and then hitting the Dark Star, pulling yourself out of the way of their hook. So I guess you know, we’re just talking about alternate game modes now.
Myrwn: I mean, I would just do the Star Guardian again. Like, Swarm was a bit different, it was like Vampire Survivors kind of, yeah.
Nick: You’re not making your way from one point to the other like you did an Odyssey.
Myrwn: I think Odyssey and Star Guardian are more like League, like how you control the champion and everything. So kind of repeat the same vibe? Just do a Star Guardian 2. Yeah, I would love it.
Nick: So then talking about special mode, special games, have you tried? There was the Swain card game in the client during the Noxus season and then obviously now we have Brawl coming out.
Myrwn: The card game I tried, I didn’t beat it. I gave up. I just gave up. I mean, I’m not really into card games. I like them, I play a bit of Hearthstone. I’m now trying to get into it, but it’s like Hearthstone but way more difficult.
Nick: Getting into watchstory?
Myrwn: And I’m not trying to get into magic, because of the Final Fantasy collab.
Nick: Oh yeah, I mean, everybody’s getting in. That’s super popular.
Myrwn: But it’s really hard for me. I tried my best, I’m not so good at it.
Nick: There’s a lot to learn and like, and if you can be as good as you are at League of Legends, I’m pretty sure you can be good at Magic together.
Myrwn: Yeah, surely I’ll just take some time. I will learn with my brother. He plays a lot, he’s the GOAT.
Nick: We’re coming to the end of the interview.
Myrwn: I would say to the people who didn’t believe in us and now they are believing in us. They are in the boat, you’re welcome here. I will make sure to keep adding more people here. You will see at MSI. We’re doing our biggest effort to make you proud. And yeah, we’ll just make sure to make you guys happy.
