MKOI had an unexpected end to its Week 2 action, dropping a game to GIANTX on the closing match on Monday. Nonetheless, the team is still holding strong in the standings with a 4-2 record, one win away from first-place Karmine Corp. Following the end of the series, we sat down with MKOI ADC David ‘Supa‘ Martínez García to hear his thoughts on the series, the unconventional Trundle pick, and why he’s still confident despite the loss.
Davide: It’s been quite a tough series, especially as in that bot lane against Caitlyn Elise. We know how powerful they are in the laning phase,
Supa: Yeah, it was a tough game. I think we didn’t play the map after we died in bot lane. I think we were in a pretty good spot; we were even in CS.
We will outscale them the moment we reach level 6, which is way easier to play, but we made a mistake. It’s fine, I think it’s a good laning phase to learn for Alvaro and me, so we will learn from that, how to do it better, how to make it more consistent. I think this was a pretty good game to learn and to keep improving. That’s how I see it… All that matters before playoffs.
Davide: Was the Trundle pick also prepared? It didn’t really come out until today.
Supa: In our team, I can’t say about the jungle, but our coaching staff prepares the draft and then talks individually with each of us about whether we like this or this or this. So I think [it’s] something that Elyoya and the staff probably talked about, and they thought it was a good pick. I could see the pick working. I think today it’s not about the picks, you know.

Davide: You guys have actually looked, prior to the series, one of the best teams or even potentially the best team in the LEC in terms of consistency and just the level of performance that you guys put together.
Supa: I think we did a good start. Anyway, the goal of the team is the same from day 1. We actually didn’t care about winning the regular season or doing really well in LEC. We are working towards facing internationals.
We are working [on] the same [things]; laning phase, the rotations, how to prepare the fights and objectives, everything. Our goal is to be the best team to face the international [teams]. So sometimes I think it will look easier versus LEC [teams], sometimes it will be tough, like today when we play differently. I think, honestly, it’s going well.

Davide: Speaking of internationals, I want to talk a little bit about the teams. Have you been watching other regions lately?
Supa: Not a lot, but some of them, I watch the strongest teams.
Davide: Are you following BLG? I would assume because of your big boy, Viper, is playing there.
Supa: Usually, you do [it by] yourself in your free time. When we are not scrimming or preparing for matches, we have a lot of free time to play solo queue to analyze bot [lane], so usually it’s in the morning or at night. I used to watch a lot of BLG as you told me, I think they were [having] a really nice start, now they lost two series in a row.
But I think BLG will be a really, really tough opponent and I’m sure they will come to the international, so I usually analyze them based on how I see the game. I try to understand when something I don’t like, or I say, ‘Okay, I wouldn’t do that’. [I] think why they do it and give a lot of until I understand what they want to do, what I will do, and what I think is correct.
I don’t believe there is always a correct answer. There are many ways of playing League of Legends. You can choose the one you like the most.
Davide: I wanted to ask about your solo queue because we went viral on Chinese platforms when I asked you about Chinese solo queue.
Supa: For sure. I think in Europe, we are way more passive, waiting for the enemy to throw, scaling. [There are] a lot of enchanters in the bot lane that I think, for example, enchanters now are really broken in the bot lane.
I miss China, I miss having 30 team fights per game, so I would like to play Chinese solo queue, but I’m sure I will have the opportunity to play Korean solo queue this year (grins).
Davide: It’s been two years since your LEC debut.
Supa: I don’t think he’s [a] rookie, but the one that surprised me the most from ADC is SamD (NAVI ADC). I think he has quite good fundamentals and he’s not scared of making mistakes or playing aggro and this is something that, as I told you, you don’t see that much in Europe. I think we are missing this so SamD is doing quite nice.
Davide: Talking about next week. You have LR, SK, and Team Heretics. I think all of them should be quite good matchups for you. But I want to put the focus on Los Ratones.
Supa: I mean, they like to play in this case, enchanters matchup, no? They play the nami. I don’t know if Rekkles plays more [champions], but I think [it] will be a really good time for Alvaro and me to play some skill matches because, as you can see in the top leagues, they play a lot of Lulu into Neeko, Neeko into Nami. And I think these matchups are the hardest to execute and come with a lot of details in the bot lane. So it will be a good chance to get some good practice.

Davide: You guys are now 4-2. It’s technically already a good starting point to land that playoff spot. How do you think the team will perform transitioning from best-of-one to best-of-series?
Supa: Yes, we are trying to work around that, but most of the teams in LEC are practicing for Bo1 because they care about the playoffs. This is normal, so we are working around that.
I believe that the better teams, the best teams, the more games you play, the more chances of winning you have. So the Bo3 and Bo5 will be really good for MKOI. I’m looking forward to it, not gonna lie, I think the Bo1 are fine for one week, but I want to play more. With this format, we don’t play at all. I spent the last three days playing nine solo queue and one official. You actually don’t play that much as a team to compete.
Supa: Thank you very much for cheering for us. I think today was a tough match as a fan, but I tell you guys that this was a really good opportunity to learn. We will keep improving. I think I’m working really well on the goal we have as a team, and I think we are going to be a really, really strong team. And I think I will be, as people like to hear, the best ADC for playoffs.
