After the incredible turnaround by KT, we spoke with MKOI Jojopyun as he looked disappointed but is still maintaining confidence for the Swiss stage.

Davide: Can you kind of walk me through the match? Because you had a very big advantage at the start. I think it was very clear that you were trying to pull off a team comp around Supa.

What went wrong and how do you feel about this match?

Jojopyun: Yeah, I think we had a very good draft today, we outdrafted them pretty hard.

Honestly, I think we played really good for the first 20 minutes. I definitely saw us ramping up too, the past days in scrims. So I think everybody had really high confidence going into today. At the end of the day, it’s competition, so it’s not always going to go your way. And we messed up really hard when it was a free game, of course, but I think as long as we take away the how to improve on the details that lost us the game and make some small adjustments, I think we have a really good shot.

Obviously, it sucks to lose, but I don’t think anyone’s going to feel too demotivated but find the advantage in it, which is okay. We’re going to see how we could have fixed the mistakes when the game was really free.

Davide: There was all the meme around yesterday about KT canceling the scrims.

Did you find another scrim partner?

Jojopyun: Yeah, we scrimmed two hours before the draw, so we got to play a couple of games. Both teams were playing well, it was good scrims. After the game ended, we were waiting the draws to happen, so we watched the draw and then we got [drawn against] KT. I think it was like a 20% chance of it happening. I was down to play after, [but] they weren’t down so [it] sucks.

Davide: In the tweet by Zeph, KT deokdam wrote a message about wanting to kill you. Do you think that was fear or respect.

What do you guys usually do when they get cancelled in these scenarios?

Jojopyun: I think me and deokdam, we have some history, even in 2022 Worlds, so it was just banter. Usually scrims get cancelled if [a team] really mental booms or something happens. But in this situation, it makes sense because we’re [playing] each other tomorrow. It doesn’t really make too much sense to scrim usually [in this case].

After that we tried to find some scrims, but all the teams were already scrimming and it was also getting pretty late anyway. We didn’t really mind too much if we couldn’t find scrims, but if we could, then, yeah, we would’ve.

Davide: In an interview with Supa, he said that the team is very aligned in how it wants to play together. You’re not trying to focus on the results itself, but [focus on] getting better, improving.

What areas you’re trying to improve on the most? On an individual level, what are you trying to improve the most?

Jojopyun: I think as a team, the whole objective right now is just team play. You know, when we’re in really good positions, like what happened today, there are moments where we play really well as a team, [but] there are moments where we just don’t coordinate at all.

We’re trying to make it much more consistent. I think today was a good example of our team play the first 20 minutes. I think we have the tendency of if a play goes wrong or something goes bad, it starts to snowballing, so it’s pretty funny. In that sense, we’re trying to work on that. Individually, [I’m] just focusing on the process and how I can adapt accordingly to my team and how I can make the whole team’s job easier.

Davide: You have always been praised a lot for your laning fundamentals.

How was the lane against BDD today? And also, where do you think you can get even better in this?

Jojopyun: I would say laning doesn’t matter too much once you’re at a certain level. Once you’re at Chovy’s level, Faker’s level, Knights level, there’s not really gonna be a gap in the laning.

The matchups will go how it’s supposed to go unless somebody’s underperforming. So in that sense, laning doesn’t matter if you’re already a top laner, so there are other areas I have to improve on much more right now. I think BDD is of course, a good player. I scrimmed against him too, and today I think he played really well. I have a lot of respect for him.

What’s your top five looking like from mids?

Jojopyun: Chovy, Faker, Knight. I’m not gonna include myself because it’s like, I think the fans want to hear my top five. Of course I’d put myself, but let’s say I’m not putting myself in this example.

Chovy, Faker, and Knight. I think Shanks at MSI played really well, but right now I’m not sure if he’s in my top five. I think Zeka’s also very scary, so I’m gonna put him there too. And then the last one, I would say BDD or Shanks, [either] one of them.

Davide: It’s clear that the LCK has been regarded as the strongest region, but

Do you think the gap between the Eastern and the Western has closed once again, considering the gameplay today?

Jojopyun: Yeah, of course, the East is still stronger than the West, and I would say KT is probably the weakest out of all the Asian teams this tournament. I’m not too surprised, honestly, that we had a good game.

But even versus the top teams I think there’s always a gap between. For the West, it’s more about catching up during the small amount of time because you’re playing the best teams so you can improve really easily and [it’s about] how much you can improve and catch up.

I think we did a bad job at doing that. In the beginning of the Worlds, we haven’t seen much progress but since the last two days and yesterday we started ramping up really hard and improving a lot really fast. So I think it’s [mainly on] how fast the west can improve. I really see the potential after the past two days, even today you can take it as a not a scrim day but as a work in our progress, showing our progress.

What’s one team that you would like to face next?

Jojopyun: I want to verse FlyQuest. It’d be really fun. But if not, I think I don’t know. Any of the top Asian teams I think will be really fun to verse. But specifically I would like to verse an NA team but I think FlyQuest would be more fun than 100Thieves.

Davide: This is the first time you’ve been to China. How is it been so far?

What’s like one thing you like about the country?

Jojopyun: Yeah, I mean China has been really nice. We bootcamped at Shanghai before coming to Beijing two weeks ago. I like Chinese food a lot.

Davide: So what’s your go-to?

Jojopyun: Xiao Long Bao? Is that how you called them?

Davide: You got those in Shanghai?

Jojopyun: And also just the dumplings and just any type of noodles or the soup, like a beef noodle soup. There’s a lot of Chinese food I really like and it’s also really cheap. Some of the prices I saw are pretty crazy for how good it tastes.

So yeah, I’d say the food’s really good. The hotels have been really, really nice. This Worlds’ hotel is probably the best hotel I’ve been to, I did hear Chinese hotels are pretty crazy. I have to say, though, I haven’t got to explore too much because we’re practicing most of the days.

One last message to the fans to round off the interview?

Jojopyun: Yeah, I mean, thank you to all the fans for supporting us. Of course it sucks to lose like this. I feel like it happens a lot where the West is in good positions and they just lose the game randomly. But for us at least, I see us ramping up and our improvement a lot. So, yeah, we’re trying our hardest for sure, and it’s only one game.
