League of Legends Renata Guide: Abilities, Build, Playstyle

Zakaria Almughrabi

The newest champion in League of Legends, Renata Glasc, is a ranged enchanter meant to be played in the support role. Unlike other picks in the role, Renata brings a darker motif present in her visuals, lore, and abilities. For experienced players of League of Legends, Renata will be a much more unique and difficult champion than other enchanters due to her high cooldowns and all-or-nothing abilities. Here is our guide on how to play Renata Glasc.

Renata in League of Legends lore is known as the Chem-Baroness. As founder of Glasc Industries, Renata wishes to redefine beauty through state-of-the-art technology for those in Zaun and Piltover alike. Despite her connections to those cities, there was no mention of Renata in Arcane. However, Renata is here now and ready to show what she’s capable of.

Renata Glasc: Abilities

Passive – Leverage

Innate: Renata’s basic attacks mark enemies for 6 seconds, dealing 1% − 5.25% (based on level) (+ 1% per 100 AP) of the target’s maximum health bonus magic damage if they were unmarked.

Allied champions’ damaging attacks and abilities against marked targets consume the mark to deal 1% − 5.25% (based on level) (+ 1% per 100 AP) of their maximum health as additional bonus magic damage.

Q – Handshake

Renata fires a hook out from her robotic arm in the target direction, dealing magic damage to the first enemy hit and rooting them for 1 second, during which they are revealed and Renata is unable to declare attacks and has her movement speed reduced by 30%. Handshake can be recast while the target is rooted.

Recast: Renata knocks the target in the target direction, though not through terrain, dealing the same damage to enemies they pass through and stunning them for 0.5 seconds if the thrown target is a champion.

W – Bailout

Renata enhances herself or the target allied champion for 5 seconds, granting the target bonus attack speed in addition to bonus movement speed while they are moving toward nearby visible enemy champions and minions, both increasing in effectiveness by 100% over the duration. Bailout’s duration resets whenever the target scores a takedown against an enemy champion within 6 seconds of damaging them.

If the target takes fatal damage while Bailout is active, they are restored to 100% of their maximum health but begin burning to take true damage equal to 8.3% of their maximum health every 0.264 seconds until they die from reaching 0 health. If they score a takedown against an enemy champion within 6 seconds of damaging them while suffering from the burn, it is stopped prematurely and they are set to 35% of their maximum health.

E – Loyalty Program

Renata sends out a chemtech rocket from either side of her that instantly strike targets around her. After 0.429 seconds they converge and travel to the target location as a single missile, striking targets along its path and exploding upon reaching its target location.

Renata and allies struck are granted a shield for 3 seconds and enemies struck are dealt magic damage and are slowed by 30% for 2 seconds.

R – Hostile Takeover

Renata launches a cloud of potent chemicals that spreads out in the target direction, which grants sight of its surroundings and turns all enemy champions and minions it passes over berserk for a duration.

Berserk causes afflicted targets to go insane, granting them 100% bonus attack speed and increased size, and forcing them to basic attack the nearest unit, regardless of being allied, enemy, or neutral. They prioritize attacking their own allies, then neutral units, then Renata’s allies, then Renata herself.

Renata Glasc: Playstyle

Despite being part of the enchanter class in League of Legends, Renata’s gameplay is not like any other enchanter. All of her abilities are incredibly high impact with the cooldowns to match. You can’t just set-and-forget her W buff like you can with a Janna or Lulu shield. The key to using Renata Glasc’s abilities will be timing.

Use Renata’s Abilities Wisely

Renata’s Q may appear to be a hook ability, but it is actually much more like a Lux or Zyra binding. The ability has 900 range compared to 1100+ on Thresh and Blitzcrank’s hooks. Additionally, Renata’s squishiness makes it difficult for her to fish for picks, as a miss could be deadly. Renata should be played as a backliner looking to peel her team and provide follow-up crowd control.

Her W, Bailout, is a unique buff that grants the target ramping attack and movement speed. This ability also has the game changing potential to extend a fallen teammate’s life if timed properly. This does bring up an interesting conundrum: should you use this ability at the start of a fight to get a carry rolling, or hold on to it to try and save a teammate? The answer will always vary. Its up to you to decide what will give your team the best chance of winning.

Perfect Peel Potential

Renata’s E is her most spammable spell by far. It is her main poking tool as well as her most versatile support ability, providing a decent shield for allies and slowing enemies if aimed well. The scaling on both halves plus reduced cooldown per level means that Renata should max this ability first. Just like with her W, you’ll need to decide if each cast is better off either used towards as many allies or enemies as possible.

Renata’s ultimate is Hostile Takeover. This ability adds a new mechanic to League of Legends, Berserk. Renata can single-handedly turn the tide of a fight if it hits one or more enemies. The caveat is that it has a very high cooldown, a 0.75 second cast time, and moves incredibly slowly. Its almost impossible to use this as an engage tool, meaning Hostile Takeover is best used reactionarily right as enemies start to jump your team.

Renata Glasc: Build

Renata Glasc’s build will start with a support item. As for whether to take Spellthief’s Edge or a Relic Shield, the answer is based on feeling. When laning versus low range opponents, Renata can take advantage of her 550 basic attack range to start Spellthief’s. However, long range ADC’s, poke mages, and even some other enchanters could prove difficult for Renata. Start Relic Shield when facing them.

Renata’s three crowd control applying abilities make her a prime candidate for Imperial Mandate as her Mythic item. While she can technically go Shurelya’s Battlesong, Renata can only apply the passive to one champion at a time on a very long cooldown. If your team doesn’t need the engage from Shurelya’s active, always go Mandate.

The rest of the Renata Glasc build can be a mixture of supportive items. Enchanter items are cheap and give her stats that she likes, although healing and shielding power is worse on Renata than other enchanters. You can still purchase Chemtech Putrifier, Redemption, or Mikael’s Crucible if the situation calls for it.

The most important stat for Renata will be Ability Haste. All of her abilities will have double digit cooldowns even at max rank. Renata wants to be able to launch as many spells as possible. As such, Ionian Boots of Lucidity will be her best footwear option. If you want to get spicy with your Renata build, Cosmic Drive provides the most Ability Haste on any item.

Renata Glasc: Runes

Renata has two main Keystone Runes that she can take. Summon: Aery in the Sorcery tree provides her with a bit of added damage and shielding. This Keystone is best when Renata can freely auto attack in lane to proc the extra damage as often as possible. Renata can also go Glacial Augment in the Inspiration tree. Both her Q and R will apply the impactful area-of-effect slow, giving Renata even more crowd control power.

Taking whichever tree you don’t main as your secondary tree will be a fine option. However, Renata has good options from the Domination and Resolve trees as well. Zombie Ward and Ultimate Hunter help her keep better vision control and drastically reduce the cooldown of her ultimate respectively. Font of Life can give Renata even more synergy with enchanter items. The healing off her marks will proc their passives.

Renata Glasc: Skins

If there’s a champion release that can really shake up League of Legends, Renata is certainly one. Her unique kit and atmosphere provide a much-needed departure from the traditional enchanter. Renata Glascs’s abilities provide high risk high reward ways for a support to impact the game. The massive amount of peel and team utility that she can provide make her a great option in the current damage heavy meta in League of Legends.

Renata’s release date is set for February 17 in the middle of Patch 12.4.
