Fortnite has tons of different ways to get XP, but Fortnite playtime XP is one of simplest. This is the system that the game uses to reward players just for occupying space in a game. You don’t have to do anything to get this XP. Literally just getting experience for being in a game. At times, exploiting quirks with Fortnite playtime XP can be the best way to grind XP. But most of the time it’s a minor boost on top of the challenges you get. This week, it’s been changed.
At the start of the current Fortnite season, there were massive nerfs to XP. Across the board. Quest rewards were done, creative was down, and Fortnite playtime XP was way down. Since this was one of the longer recent Fortnite seasons, everything was dialled down to make sure players didn’t finish their Battle Pass immediately and move on to something else. But now we’re getting close to the Fortnite season ending, it has had some changes. Fortnite playtime XP has been buffed! Finally, the XP is getting back to normal.
Jumping back into Fortnite right now, you’ll find playtime XP is levelling you up a lot more just for playing. It’s been buffed differently for different modes though. With some rewarding players a lot more. This is what’s changed and how playtime XP works:
Compared to systems like Fortnite Ranked which are a bit obtuse, the XP in the game is quite simple. While the exact XP reward is different for different players, it’s consistent in giving XP for the same actions. One of the easiest in Fortnite playtime XP, which is the general XP you gain for being in a game. No quests or anything like that, just a passive XP gain for spending time in a lobby. Of course, you need to be careful of the game falling asleep if you spend too long without moving.
In the past, Fortnite modes like Lego have handed out loads of playtime XP. So, players only needed to keep an account active in Lego to level up quite a bit. There are no exploits right now, the passive Lego XP is now pretty low, but the overall XP gain has been buffed! These are the changes according to dataminer @ShiinaBR in the most recent update to Fortnite playtime XP:
Some modes are handing out tons of XP just for playing! As you can tell, the core Royale modes don’t get a major boost. Neither do some others like Fortnite Delulu. For some reason Fortnite tournaments are handing out a lot more XP right now. As is Lego, which has always had a better rate and Festival Royale.
These changes will mean those modes give the best bang for your time in terms of Fortnite playtime XP. Grinding specific XP maps in Fortnite or doing quests will likely be a quicker way to level up though.
That’s what’s changed with the Fortnite playtime XP but why has it been moved around so much? This is one area which gets muddled up a lot. Especially for some modes like Lego. This recent change is likely more to do with the playtime lately. Which has been bad.
Epic nerfed pretty much all XP earlier in the season. Otherwise, everyone would be finished and not playing anymore. But now we’ve only got a couple of weeks left. Reducing how much XP players gained didn’t help player numbers in a longer season.
In fact, it’s been one of the worst Fortnite seasons since player count figures were made available, the worst in years. So, with only a couple of weeks to go, we’ve had a reset to one of the XP sources that got nerfed. This will help players get through their Battle Pass, and maybe help keep a few people sticking around in-game for the quieter weeks.
With the recent changes to Fortnite playtime XP, it’ll be a bit easier to grind through Chapter 6 Season 4 Battle Pass. Although, the current changes won’t be handing out levels just for playing matches in Battle Royale. If you want to get it done quickly, you’ll still need to be a bit more focused than that.
If you want to get through the Fortnite Battle Pass this season, it’s quickest in Fortnite XP maps. However, Battle Royale can work very well too. Any mode where you’ve built up uncompleted quests can be great for XP if you’re playing to those quests.
After this season ends, we’ll be in a mini-season with a brand-new map. This will have a smaller pass, but it’ll only last a month! So, players should be wary of XP right now if they to collect everything without spending too much time grinding in November.
