With the current season of Fortnite kicking off, we’ve got a better idea of what tournaments are coming. It’s looking like Fortnite Duos will be the main mode for esports in quite a few of the big tournaments! Which has got players speculating that this might be the format we’re going with for FNCS 2026.
At least for this season’s Divisional Cups, it’s a welcome return for a format which is often thought of as the best for Fortnite competitive play. While loads of great players are don’t seem to have their Duos partner locked in yet, Peterbot and Pollo, the two stand outs from NAC this year, are reuniting.
The return of Fortnite Duos esports this season will mean Trios are left with a difficult choice. Do two of the players stick together and one seek out a new partner? Do they abandon these new teams entirely and find a new partner? Peterbot and Pollo don’t have those kinds of issues, with the record setting C5 Duo reuniting for tournaments this season. How has the change back to Fortnite Duos changed things?
Fortnite esports regularly switches up its format, this year we switched into Trios. Which meant most tournaments focused on this team size. Including the FNCS, and the Global Championship LAN that’s about to start. This will close out the year’s esports. But that doesn’t mean no more tournaments.
We’ve seen Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 4 tournaments announced to bridge the gap. We’ll still get regular competitions while we wait for the return of the FNCS. These tournaments include the Divisional Cups, that served as qualifiers to the FNCS this year. For Chapter 6 Season 4, they’ll be stand-alone events running regularly. Which seems to be switching back to Duos.

The year in Trios has been fun. But now at its end, there’s pretty big problems. Storm Surge trading has reached ridiculous levels. We saw teams in Major 3 dying to surge when they’d been cleaning out the lobby. While Trios who sat in towers exchanging 50 damage over and over again rose the average up too high without ever getting an actual kill.
Returning to Duos could lighten the storm surge mechanics importance. The smaller team sizes get, the lower the average damage is going to be. It also means the difference between teams having three players constantly trading and those actually playing is much less. Although, now teams have discovered what is essentially an exploit to one of the core mechanics, surge will probably remain a pretty big factor in results.
Right now, most are likely wondering who the best Forntite players are going to be douing with for this Div Cups.
Whenever Fortnite competitive switches format, players start searching for their new teamamtes. One isn’t a huge surprise though, Peterbot and Pollo.
They’ve confirmed they’ll be playing together in these Duos tournaments. This Duo had an amazing run in Chapter 5, winning three Majors back-to-back before separating into two different Trios in Chapter 6. Even this year though, they’ve won every major on their separate teams. With the last one in NAC being a two-horse race between them.

They attempted to join back up in Season 2 this year, but Epic passed a new rule requiring all six players involved to sign off on it. Now there’s no barriers, they’ll be hard to beat in these tournaments.
Elsewhere, we’re seeing some of the biggest Fortnite players searching for a new partner. Some of the top performing Trios could be breaking up entirely. It’ll be especially interesting to see where players from Peterbot and Pollo’s Trios go. A potential Cold and Ritual Trio could still be very imposing, as would Ajerss and Acorn. With Peterbot and Pollo together, this frees up four of the best players in NAC to find a new partner.
Clix has said he’d rather Duo with Eomzo or Higgs, but hasn’t locked one in yet. He’s ruled out Duoing with Khanada in his first stream of the season, who was absolutely killing it in Major 3.
We could see some powerful Duos formed from the best Fortnite players after all this experience in Chapter 6. But this is currently just for the Div Cups. We don’t know for certain what format next year’s FNCS will be played in. We probably won’t find out until during or after the Global Championship. A return to Duos is looking just as likely as Trios sticking around at the moment though. So these Duo partnerships could go to be quite important.
The FNCS Global Championship is still being played in Trios. But once it’s done, we’ll start to see which Duos are lined up for next year. In this week, we’ve also seen Trios start to claim their POIs for Grands. It’s all heating up, and the current season looks like an interesting meta to play all these events on.
