Fortnite went down for an update today, with the game now back online we’ve got a clear idea of what’s changed. It’s enabled the Crown Jam game mode! A sports game which leaked a little early and had the entire Fortnite player base asking who is this for? There’s been some other changes too though. including a look at next season for Festival.

New Crown Jam Fortnite Mode in Today’s Update

There’s not been a major change to BR, not really fixing the major problems it has had lately. What we’ve got instead is a new LTM, a Fall Guys basketball mode which has inexplicably been added into Fortnite. This is everything that’s changed over the Fortnite update today.

The big part of the new Fortnite update has been the release of Crown Jam. This is a basketball game which uses the Fall Guys beans in the game. It handles like Fall Guys too. only it’s not in Fall Guys, it’s in Fortnite.

Weirdly, it doesn’t use Fortnite skins at all. Even the Bean versions that got added in purely for use in Creative. instead it’s a handful of generic bean characters. There’s a lot about this mode which is confusing.

This is probably part of their larger scheme to merge Fall Guys into Fortnite. Since the original game is still running though, it’s strange to put it here. It seems like it might have a more responsive audience in Fall Guys. However, you can unlock some free cosmetics if you want to play bean basketball. That’ll probably keep it busy enough for a week or two. It’s a 3v3 game mode and will be here until February 9th.

Bug Fixes

One big change players have been waiting for is the bug fixes. A lot of stuff is broken right now. We’ve been expecting some improvements in the Crown Jam update:

Epic is claiming the update has fixed the lag issues, especially around the menu. Players are reporting mixed results though. They’re also promising more fixes in the future.

Battle Royale

Any Fortnite update for Battle Royale is a little more exciting, but not much has changed this time. Fortnite BR has had some small things re-arranged but it’s not had a substantial change. Shockwaves are still gone, the meta is roughly the same. An NPC has some new dialogue though, and you can always go play Crown Jam instead.

The final few stages of the South Park quests will start rolling out too. meaning you can get the free items from that finally. These quests and Winterfest both seemed to have been designed to keep players logging in regularly in an otherwise uneventful Fortnite season, but if you’ve maxed out your Battle Pass it’s nearly over.

New Skins

As with any Fortnite update, there’s been a ton of Fortnite skins added into the game. These include a batch of upcoming Fortnite skins which haven’t been released yet. Plus, some collabs coming soon. Like the Office Fortnite crossover they announced recently.

Those are the big changes for the Fortnite update today! Crown Jam will have some fans, especially with free rewards on offer right now. It doesn’t seem likely to stick around as a permanent mode though.

The Fortnite update didn’t quite roll out cleanly either. Players found the title offline again a few hours later. The update had added in a matchmaking issue which left people unable to actually get into games. Now the servers is back up though, we should be able to get back into the game.
