It’s finally here! We’ve all been wondering when the next Dota patch will be and now patch 7.40 has just dropped and along with it, the long awaited frog bard Largo as the brand new hero in the game. Patch 7.39 was the second longest in Dota history coming several months after our usual post-TI patches so this long awaited update has got the entire community hyped up.
Largo is a melee support hero with a very unique ultimate. Unfortunately, Largo hasn’t been given a facet just yet so we’ll have to make do with learning this new Dota heroes skills for now. Here’s the full breakdown of his abilities:

OK so Dota has guitar hero now? When Largo casts his ultimate, he becomes disarmed and his ability bar switches to 3 different song abilities. The song must be strummed successfully to have an effect. Every time he strums successfully, he gains a stack of Groovin’. Each stack gives him bonus armor and reduces the mana cost of every song, but he loses a stack if he misses a beat. Stacks linger for a short duration when Largo’s song ends.
In order to cast the spell, hit your usual ultimate key (probably R) and then use your other spell keys (QWE) to cast one of the 3 songs.
This is going to take some getting used to. Dota heroes like Kez and Largo are becoming a little bit more complicated to play and I, for one, am all for it.
Along with the new Dota hero, we also got a bit of insight into his backstory. Visually, Largo looks like a pretty chill guy with an open cardigan and shells on his guitar. Life seemed very relaxed in the Murkroot Forest unless the Talga-Ruun – a walking thorn – attacked and spread over the land, forcing Largo’s people to leave their home and find a new place to live.
All hope seemed lost before one among the tribe began singing with the help of his lute. The sea heard the song and an island grew from the middle of the ocean: Valu’Mar. This island and the people found a symbiotic relationship but the happiness didn’t last long as the island began to die. In an effort to save his people, Largo was tasked by the head monk with playing the sacred lute that will save the island. Along with his frogling friends, Largo went to the sacred cavern to play new songs for the island, which had the desired effect and brought the Valu’Mar back even more beautiful than before.
Now, Largo has left the island to spread inspiration and bring the world back to his people.
Valve has something of a habit of dropping game changing Dota patches during DreamLeague, with this being the third time this has happened. Although this means that all of the other gameplay updates will be in available for tomorrow’s games, the new Dota hero will not. Just with releases of heroes like Kez, Ringmaster and more, we’re going to have to wait some time to see Largo played in professional Dota.
