So, when is the next Dota 2 patch?

Without even checking social media, I am absolutely, positively sure that I am not alone when I say “I’m going insane waiting for the next Dota 2 patch”. At the time of writing, it has been nearly seven months since Patch 7.39 dropped, which developer and publisher Valve Corporation entitled “Spring Forward” as a nod to the season that it released in.

So, when is the next Dota 2 patch?

Since then, the patch itself has had four minor updates, each focusing on tweaking the current meta. While 7.39 has been a rousing success in terms of balancing the game, it’s already quite long in the tooth — and Dota fans are clamoring for something new before the year ends. So then, when is the next Dota patch?

Will there be a Dota patch this week?

The good news is that DreamLeague season 27 is ongoing. The ESL Pro Tour series is notorious for receiving massive balance patches in the middle of its proceedings. Hell, Valve actually pushed Patch 7.39 to the live servers while DreamLeague Season 26 was ongoing, right before the second group stage was set to kick off.

Considering that we’re just a few weeks away from the new year, this is probably the best and most likely time for Valve to implement 7.40 — or at least, I hope that’s what we get instead of 7.39f. It’s unfortunately been radio silence on that front from them, with another round of Quartero’s Curios coming out on December 12th just to rub it in a little bit.

Nobody really wants cosmetics right now unless it comes in the form of a battle pass for The International, but given that TI14 is long over, that’s obviously not happening, and that’s not even considering Valve’s stance on battle passes as a whole these days.

Almost entirely solved

It’s no secret to anyone that Patch 7.39 is feeling very samey at this point. Naga Siren is banned every damn game, and completely dominates any where she isn’t, Dragon Knight is extremely flexible and works well from all three core positions, and Chen is broken beyond belief. Even though the game is very balanced overall like I said, the meta being nearly solved and looking the same every tournament makes it boring to watch now.

Naga Siren Dota 2

Yes, we have teams still breaking the mold like when Team Liquid beat Tundra Esports at DreamLeague Season 27 with a safe lane Leshrac pick, but such innovations are unfortunately few and far between now. The game is in a healthy state balance-wise, but Dota players the world over are understandably clamoring for some change.

Anyway, personally don’t think it’ll happen, but it would be the funniest damn thing ever if we did get 7.40 during DreamLeague season 27 — so Valve, the ball is in your court. I don’t care that my power rankings for DreamLeague would just go straight out the window as a result of a patch now; just give it to us already.

Because if I see too many more games dictated by Dragon Knight or Centaur Warrunner, I might just need to check myself into a hospital. At least Helm of the Dominator isn’t as popular as it used to be.
