It’s been something of a tough year for G2 Esports but now, they’re landed themselves in the playoffs at BLAST Open London 2025. Ahead of their quarterfinals game against FaZe Clan, I got to speak to Alvaro “SunPayus” Garcia about finding his feet on G2, playing with Matys and how is feels to have huNter- as an IGL.
Sophie: How you doing, SunPayus?
SunPayus: I’m doing really good, thank you. How you doing?
Sophie: Yeah, I’m all good, thank you.
SunPayus: A bit rainy. I like a lot the London, at least. Like, I saw something that I don’t see normally, which is many houses, like, next to each other, and I think that’s like a neighbourhood really good. I don’t know. It’s different.
Sophie: Oh, that’s cool. It’s kind of vibey, I guess.
SunPayus: Yeah.
Sophie: What’s your favourite restaurant to go to in London?
SunPayus: I will discover it. I didn’t have enough time to check.
Sophie: Okay, cool. Everybody says Nando’s usually, so maybe try Nando’s. So I wanted to talk a little bit about the series and how the tournament’s been going so far.
SunPayus: Well, we know that the first time we played against them, we lost. It was another BLAST event, I think. But we lost, obviously, because obviously they played better. But we had things that we had to fix, obviously.
On Mirage, I think we still struggled against them. We didn’t find exactly the proper answer. But overall, I think we came into the game with a proper mindset. I think we were a bit frustrated overall, mainly me sometimes. But it’s fine. It happens. I was resetting after every map and we managed to play a clean Ancient.
Sophie: Absolutely. I was gonna say, I mean, you say you struggle, but that was a 13-1 on Ancient.

SunPayus: I mean, I think we are a team that shows a lot of confidence when we play. I feel we are confident overall. And it was only one map, obviously. Spirit is a really tough opponent. It’s one of the best teams in the world. So yeah, I think, I don’t know if they had an off game or we just hit every single call also and every single shot, which can happen also sometimes.
Sophie: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Because you’ve only been playing with G2 for a couple of months. You’re already not the first new guy now.
SunPayus: I think it was perfect. I think it’s fine. I think the relationship and the chemistry in the team is really good. I think we just need time because obviously we need more officials. We need to win some games that we shouldn’t. We should lose games that we shouldn’t lose and learn a lot and keep improving.
Sophie: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Because this is the second team that you’ve played with SaW as coach. You had him with Heroic and again with G2.
SunPayus: I think it’s pretty similar. I would say.
Sophie: Okay.
SunPayus: He adjust a little to the IGL and the way to approach the game. But anyway, I think the kind of. Like, everything is the same as you said. It can take more or less time depending on the players and depending on how many games you play, how much work you put on and everything. But I think we are in the right track. And, yeah, we will see with time if we. How do you say it? If we belong. Sorry. To the best teams, right?
Sophie: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you’re off to a good start, right?
SunPayus: I don’t think so but it’s not bad also.
Sophie: I mean, it’s a lan. It’s somewhere. Okay. I wanted to ask about huNter- as well. You mentioned him as IGL.
SunPayus: I find, like. I think he’s really good. Like, he has, like, really good ideas and he sees the game, like, the overview of the game in a really, like, the same way I do. So obviously we don’t clash. We are, like, on the same page in other things. In most of the things. So, yeah, I’m pretty happy.
Sophie: Okay, that’s great. So, one. Just one last question for you.
SunPayus: We just played. We just practise it.
Sophie: Just shoot heads.
SunPayus: Yeah, yeah, practise. Have fun on the practise. Learn and fix mistakes. And yeah, at the end, we are a new team and we shouldn’t have high expectations. We know how well we can play, but obviously we are not. We are not consistent still.
Sophie: Yeah, exactly. There’s still a little bit of a way to go. Okay, well, thank you so much for that and good luck at the next stage.
SunPayus: Thank you so much.
