BIG EQUIPA have cemented their names in the history of female Counter-Strike by winning the final ever ESL Impact League at the Season 8 Finals. By winning ESL Impact, BIG EQUIPA have won the biggest prize in women’s CS for the first time.

In recent years, Imperial Valkyries have been the dominant force in women’s Counter-Strike, with that team’s core taking home every single title until Season 7. Last season, FURIA fe finally rocked the boat and gave us a brand-new winner, and BIG EQUIPA have repeated the feat by beating MIBR fe in a back-and-forth Grand Final.

History made for BIG EQUIPA, but with a bittersweet taste

Hanka. vicu. kyossa. Emmsan. ASTRA. Remember the names of BIG EQUIPA’s champions at ESL Impact League Season 8. MIBR fe felt as though they had that “Final Boss” energy coming into this Grand Final, and it was going to take something special to prevent veteran Olga from lifting a title that had eluded her for many years.

Once they stepped onto the server, it was clear that both teams had come to play. BIG EQUIPA managed to close out a tight Dust2 opener, in which the duo of kyossa and vicu played a starring role. But with legacy on the line, MIBR fe were not about to roll over and quit. Instead, they bounced back on BIG EQUIPA’s pick of Inferno, winning out a similarly close 13:10 map. This time, it was a particularly dominant 26:10 scoreline for yungher that separated the two teams.

Map three will be filled with regret for MIBR fe. Their CT-side on Nuke went all according to plan, and they took an 8:4 lead into the final half of this series. But T-side, they completely fell flat, managing to win just one round from 10, as BIG EQUIPA bounced back to take a 13:9 win. An explosion of emotions as they lifted the trophy for the first time.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to separate BIG EQUIPA’s historic win from the suspension of ESL Impact going forward. Where will we watch Tier 1 women’s CS2 matches from here? Who knows. It’s a bittersweet feeling, knowing the scene has only continued to improve over the last few years. But I have no doubt that it will find new ways to survive, and hopefully, one day it can thrive again. For now, BIG EQUIPA can celebrate their victory, and leave the sorrow for tomorrow.
