One of the most consistent and beloved Game Changers teams has made some changes that have had us cratching our heads, are G2 Gozen in trouble?

Petra leaves the G2 Gozen main roster

Petra has been a force in Game Changers, as part of the core that ran GC through firepower and experience, she and Juliano have lifted many a trophy. Both came from CS, and while the latter left in 2023 to persue CS2, Petra stuck out with EU’s queens. The team has been held to incredibly high standards by competitors like Shopify Rebellion. They’re a mainstay in EMEA’s Game Changers Grand Finals, and consistently put in top 3 performances in the Game Changers Championship. Lest we forget this is the team that won its inaugural Championship.

The team has been shifting its roster with each year, which is normal for any organization, but as the members of the trophy lifting Gozen started to slip away to other teams, the core of Mimi and Petra was the rock the rest of the team orbited around. Until Petra was moved to the inactive decision, making way for Akita. The move comes with the addition of a new head coach.

Why has Petra left G2 Gozen?

The move has been a surprising one. Petra’s initial tweets have been in good stride, looking forward to the future. Mimi also weighed in, being in the conversation for the decision that ultimately has led to the final games for the duo, looking to put the young blood into the duelist role.

We know that in addition to G2’s new duelist, Vania will be moving back to the smokes role. G2 Gozen’s results haven’t been dire to the point that a shake up seemed like the obvious choice. They finished the standings in 1st place, tied with KC at 8-1, but leading on round differential. Playoffs though would see them pipped to the post in both the Upper and Lower Bracket Finals by GIANTX and Karmine Corp.

With results not being the ones that the organization wanted or have come to expect, they wanted to pull the trigger on a change. G2 has been compromising on their roles this year, and the focus on putting Vania back on smokes would have Petra back in the duelist role, which was looking to be done via trials.

These people don’t understand that it is our job to make sure this team performs at the highest level all the time, which sometimes requires hard decisions like this one. It’s not the first time we make such decision, and it won’t be the last. It’s part of why we’ve been so successful for almost 4 years

Gozen even considering having Petra fight for her spot feels criminal, but Tibalt affirmed that G2 is a team built to win, and decisions like this are what have helped them run the region so consistently.

Petra ultimately decided that she would not partake in the trials to fight for her duelist spot, which means her chapter at G2 Gozen is coming to an end. The move hasn’t been met with only positivity, as many who loved seeing Petra on G2 are sad to see her go, even ex teammate Juliano broke what had been a dry spell for talking about VALORANT to weigh in her concerns about the org’s direction.

Where Petra will end up next is anyone’s guess, of the 2 teams that outplaced G2 Gozen in Stage 1, 2 of her ex teammates have found homes. Sarah at runner up GIANTX and Glance over at Karmine Corp. Are G2 Gozen in trouble? Probably not, while they’ll be losing a huge bank of stability and experience in Petra, firepower can sometimes blow open any well laid plan. Here’s hoping the new additions at the Duelist and Coach positions can start off that next stage on all cylinders.
