After their unexpected comeback against NAVI in their last match of the LEC Versus Week 1, we spoke to FNC jungler Iván “Razork” Martín Díaz to hear his thoughts on the game and why he’s confident about his team despite the shaky gameplay.

Davide: First of all, congratulations on the win. That was quite the series.

What are your thoughts right now and did you expect that kind of comeback in the game?

Razork: I mean, to be honest, it was a pretty disgusting game, not gonna lie. I felt like we were completely afk. We were not doing anything and we were just slowly losing, so it was very painful to play that game.

But of course, I feel like we didn’t play against the best team in EU or in the world, so we knew they were going to make mistakes. We tried to grab them as much as we could, and in the end, we just won fights. We were playing better in fights, so we ended up taking the win, which is very important, I think, to go 2-1 considering that we are not playing our best gameplay right now. We have some rookies, and we are kind of a new team, so we have some “air,” and we are not very stressed about getting the wins because right now we have a lot of work to do.

What are the areas you think Fnatic should work on most? We’ve talked about how the team has been struggling a lot in the early game. Is there anything else aside from that?

Razork: I mean, to be honest, I feel like the early game is very bad, as you said, but we are playing scared. I don’t see the same players I’m playing with in scrims. They’re just very scared to make plays or to do something and [it] just doesn’t feel right.

Does that have to do with the shot calling or how the new dynamic is set up? GrabbZ shared with us previously that it looked like last year, it was only you and Upset that were the main voices both inside and outside of the game. Has that changed this year with the new lineup?

Razork: I think Vladi is a person who talks a lot in-game, but for sure, we just need to keep making sure that everyone is confident because I don’t believe in the ‘one guy should talk only’. I think everyone should be saying use useful information, and we should reach a conclusion and a plan altogether and execute it. I mean, right now, we are not the best at it, but we are trying to improve.

Davide: I wanted to touch upon two players. The first one is Rhilech. How do you think he has been performing so far? NAVI has been showing up quite well.

What do you think of Rhilech as a player, especially considering he’s a rookie?

Razork: I mean, I think he played one more Ambessa Qiyana. I’m a bit impressed. Usually, [when] you come as a rookie, you’re a bit more scared to make plays, or you’re nervous. I think he played very confidently and I think he could be a very good player in the future. I think right now he’s still very good, but I think he has a lot of room to improve.

Davide: The other player I wanted to talk about is Los Ratones’ jungler Velja. You guys already faced him at the start of the LEC versus and he has kind of been struggling in the past two matches.

What advice would you give to a new player, considering you’re one of the most experienced junglers in the LEC right now?

Razork: I mean, if I had to tell him something, it would probably be like, just keep trying. I can see that it’s not easy to play when the team is not doing great, and even more as a jungler. He’s been playing engage champions only so you need to actually play extremely well, or you just do one E-Q bad, and you instantly die or lose a fight, so it’s a lot of pressure on him. I think he can do much more than what he’s showing right now. So I wish him all the best, and hopefully his team can do better.

Davide: I also wanted to touch upon the struggles topic. You said on the broadcast the other day that you struggled a lot at a certain point last year.

How did you overcome the hurdle and the obstacles? And how did you come back stronger this season?

Razork: Well, the obstacles are gonna be always there. You just need to deal with it or make sure that they don’t affect you that much. I’m still very passionate about the game. I like competing and I still want my LEC trophy, so that’s just my goal.

I want to be in a team that I’m feeling happy, I’m feeling alive, and I have players that are willing to sacrifice for each other and improve. I just want to have a good dynamic in the team and I think even though right now we are not, as I said, the best, I think what I’m seeing from my boys is they are actually trying to learn and put in a lot of work, so I can’t ask for more. I think results will come naturally and the gameplay should improve. We need to improve faster than we are doing right now, but I can see that we are improving.

We need to make sure that we are playing the same way we are playing scrims on stage. But I’m not feeling too rushed on that because it’s the first week of LEC and I remember my first week when I was a rookie and I was also completely running it down, and that doesn’t make me a bad player at all. It’s just some nerves and you need to get used to the LEC and stuff. So yeah, I’m patient with them and I think it’s gonna be great in the future.

Is there anyone else who stood out to you from this week 1?

Razork: Honestly, I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t watch all the games, but I mean, I still think probably SkewMond Elyoya are the best players in LEC right now, or one of the best. I think they’re playing great so far.

Davide: Are you able to keep up with other leagues? Did you get to watch some LCK games or LPL games recently?

Razork: Yeah.

What do you think about the meta overall? How is the meta shaping up across regions? Did you see any differences? Because it feels like to me that we all expected the new season to be a lot about the late game, who gets the stronger carries, but it feels like the drafts say otherwise, especially in the first few games of the series, where we get a lot of early game champions or laning-focused champions. So I kind of wanted to hear your thoughts on that. And how does that then affect you as a jungler?

Razork: Yeah, well, I think the meta, even though I think ADCs are way stronger in the late game, I feel like if you don’t have a chill early game and you actually get really behind because there is no lane swap anymore and enemies get the quest way faster than you, that snowballs a lot.

And also for Jungle, considering that the second crab will most likely give level six to both junglers, that’s like another objective for the game, which is very important. Whoever gets level six faster is allowed to get control of mid, maybe look for a bot dive or stuff like this.

So yeah, I think the early game is still very, very important, and as FNC, we are not doing that well on that, so we need to improve there. And yeah, in LCK, we saw their games first because they played first. I think some teams from LEC are copying a bit more of their priorities, and some other teams are just like having their own identity and picking whatever they think is strong. It’s Bo1, so it’s hard to define a meta even though it’s very clear that, for example, Corki-Yunara is always there because they’re pretty strong champs. But I feel like you can play any champion right now in Bo1.

You’re facing MKOI, GIANTX, and Vitality next week. What are you expecting from these three matches or which one? Which team are you looking forward to facing the most?

Razork: Honestly, I think all three matches are not gonna be easy. I think they are pretty good teams, but the only thing I’m concerned about is how we’re going to show up, and hopefully, this week that we have ahead of us to practice will be useful in terms of us not being scared to make plays. And let’s be honest, if we play like we played today against NAVI, against MKOI or GX, we won’t have a chance. So we have to change that if we want to actually win.

Any last message to the fans?

Razork: My message will be that you guys (the fans) will need to have patience with us. As I said, we are two rookies and some players who are still trying to adapt to the team. So right now, we are not very good, but we will get there slowly. Just trust and be patient.
