Pinoy Dota 2 is officially back on the menu, with OG guaranteeing themselves a top 8 finish at least at PGL Wallachia Season 6. They started this tournament red hot with two straight series wins, though they came back down to earth somewhat yesterday when they lost to Team Liquid in round 3 of the Swiss group stage.

OG continue to defy odds, secure top 8 at PGL Wallachia Season 6

They have since taken off again, thanks to a 2-1 victory today over BLAST Slam 4 bronze medalists HEROIC.

Game 1 — The King of the Jungle

HEROIC got off to a hot start in this matchup off the back of an incredible performance by Matheus “KJ” Santos Jungles Diniz as Chen. He had 15 (yes, fifteen) assists to his name by the end of the mere 31 minute contest, showcasing the power and control that Chen can give to one’s team. Actually, keep a mental note of that point — we’ll come back to it later.

Anyway, the way HEROIC simply snowballed from KJ’s tempo made me worry about OG’s chances heading into this series. HEROIC just got whatever they wanted out of every skirmish, and the game was pretty much over by the 20 minute mark. With so much teamfight in their draft backed by the healing from Hand of God (R), they were able to just run OG over without much trouble.

Not a great first game for the Filipino squad, and it was at this point that I thought things would turn out as they usually do for Southeast Asian teams.

Game 2 — What you can do…

Fortunately, this is where OG decided that they’d had enough of losing. They took the Chen for themselves this game, handing it over to Andrei “skem” Ong and giving him the keys. What transpired was basically a mirror image of the first game, with skem grabbing 19 assists and putting OG on his back the whole time.

His teammates were quick to capitalize on his Chen play, grouping up to mow down HEROIC’s towers alongside John Anthony “Natsumi-” Vargas’ carry Beastmaster. With so much tempo and momentum propelling OG in the mid game, it was just a matter of not giving away silly deaths and keeping the pace.

That’s exactly what they did, with their teamfight coordination and shotcalling looking much, much better what than SEA teams usually show. Honestly, that’s been a recurring theme for OG this entire tournament, and I have to give a shoutout to coach Adam “343” Shah for keeping this team humming along as they are now.

Game 3 — …We can do better

But before I get ahead of myself, there’s still the third and final game to talk about. Though it took a few minutes longer than the previous game, the deciding game was actually an even bigger stomp than the last. HEROIC clearly didn’t learn from the beatdown they had just received prior, as they allowed skem to get Chen in the draft once more.

They got punished hard for it as one might expect, but this time Erin Jasper “Yopaj” Ferrer got in on the action with his mid Nature’s Prophet. And not just mid Nature’s Prophet, but mid Nature’s Prophet with the Nature’s Profit facet. He actually picked this facet in their 2-0 victory over PARIVISION on the first day of the tournament, but completely forgot to even pick up the money bags from all the kills he got.

This time, he made sure to make the most of his facet choice, and it paid off massively. He clocked in nearly 850 gold per minute, and that’s after he lost the lane hard to Adrián “Wisper” Dobles’ Venomancer. A 26 minute Black King Bar timing followed by Hurricane Pike, Daedalus, and Satanic thereafter tells you the rest of what you need to know, really.

So yes, Chen was undoubtedly the x-factor in this entire series. He was the reason all three games were complete stomps going one way or another, and I think teams will have to start consider banning this hero against OG in particular. But more than that, this roster is firing on all cylinders right now, and I am now strongly reconsidering where they stand against the rest of the field at PGL Wallachia Season 6.
