Items are everything in Dota 2, as they’re what truly make your hero stronger. If you build correctly, your items can do a lot of the heavy lifting without you having to overthink every move. Here are the best items in patch 7.40c that you can abuse to win your games.

Best Dota 2 Items in Patch 7.40c for Easy MMR

Guardian Greaves

If I were to name the “item of the patch,” it would easily be Guardian Greaves. You might have seen this item picked up in every single match you’ve played, and there’s a very good reason why.

It’s especially popular on offlaners, with Razor being the prime example. However, the best Dota 2 mid players also buy the item on heroes like Storm Spirit, Leshrac, and Shadow Fiend, as they also make use of the item.

In Patch 7.40, the item’s cost was reduced from 5050 to 4300 gold. That’s roughly a 15% decrease, which is massive for such a high-impact aura item.

The dispel Greaves provides is a real game changer. Heroes like Razor, Storm, and Lesh hate dealing with silences, slows, and damage-over-time effects. Greaves’ active ability lets them cleanse those debuffs immediately, allowing them to delay their BKB timing and buy items that feel better.

On top of that, Greaves is perfect for grouping up early. You can group up with your team to take all Tier 1 towers, which will give you immense map control heading into the mid game. The mana and health sustain also helps with farming efficiency. The item lets you keep health and mana high and reduce the number of trips back to base.

Spirit Vessel

Another item you’ll see in almost every single pub this patch is Spirit Vessel. It has quietly become the go-to first item for mid players.

This item has been slowly buffed over multiple patches, but 7.40 really opened the floodgates. Now, Spirit Vessel and Urn of Shadows can both gain charges from the same hero death. That means you no longer have to sell your Urn if you didn’t communicate buying it with your teammates.

A lot of mid heroes are rushing it because it provides early stats, sustain, and a lot of reliable damage, especially in the early game. The best part is the damage doesn’t fall off later on, since it’s percentage-based.

The meta currently rewards aura items, where heroes are harder to burst. Vessel helps you chip them down reliably. Just make sure you’re using it smartly by making sure it doesn’t get instantly dispelled.

Pipe of Insight and Crimson Guard

It honestly feels like these two items never fall off. Auras are still ridiculously strong in this patch, and if you’re a Dota 2 offlane player looking to farm some easy wins, the recipe is simple: just stack aura items. That’s really it. You don’t need to overthink anything.

If your team has the holy trinity of auras – Greaves, Pipe, and Crimson – and the enemy team doesn’t, 5v5 fights feel super easy to take. You walk in, press your buttons, and nobody on your team dies. You can literally start aura farming in your pubs.

However, buying all three items on the offlane can take quite a while, as you need roughly 12,000 gold to complete them. That’s why if your mid laner or support can buy the Greaves instead, you can hit this triple-item timing as a team much faster.

The only thing you really need to think about is the build order. Decide whether it’s best to buy Pipe or Crimson first.

Phylactery

Now, let’s give the carries some love. Phylactery has become a very popular item pickup on heroes like Phantom Lancer, Riki, and Spectre. These heroes tend to struggle farming in the early game because of weak stats or poor sustain, and Phylactery patches those holes nicely.

This item gives you 6.5 HP regen, 2.25 mana regen, +6 all stats, and bonus damage on spells you cast. These are some really nice stat injections that can get these heroes through the early-to-mid game. It’s similar to how carries were buying Meteor Hammer as a first item for its raw stats.

The bonus spell damage also allows these heroes to join fights earlier instead of AFK farming for 20 minutes. Even though Phylactery received a slight nerf in Patch 7.40c, it’s still very viable. You can always sell the item later or upgrade it into Khanda if you need the break mechanic.

Kaya

Kaya on its own isn’t necessarily the broken item in this patch – it’s what it builds into. This item opens up very viable upgrade paths, which include Kaya and Sange, Kaya and Yasha, and even Meteor Hammer.

Meteor Hammer has become a real threat again, particularly on Invoker. Tornado into Meteor Hammer is an absurd early-game combo that dishes out so much damage and tower pressure. Sometimes, Meteor Hammer even feels stronger than rushing a Spirit Vessel.

Kaya and Sange is extremely popular on mid laners. It amplifies magic damage while also making you much tankier with the stats provided. Heroes like Queen of Pain, Storm Spirit, Ember Spirit, and Necrophos love buying these items because it lets them deal more damage without getting popped instantly.

Kaya and Yasha, on the other hand, is all about smoothness. The stats are great, but the real reward comes from the reduced cast time. Your spells come out faster, which makes it harder for enemy players to react. It’s very popular on heroes like Shadow Fiend, Lina, Earthshaker, and Magnus. Even some Kez players have been picking it up.

The best part is these items don’t really require any skill or brainpower to use.

Boots of Bearing

What a surprise – yet another aura item. But that’s the reality of this patch. If you want to get ahead of everyone else, you buy auras, and Boots of Bearing is right up the alley. This item gives you insane tempo, as you’re getting passive movement speed, health regen, and other stats.

In my opinion, movement speed is one of the most underrated stats in Dota 2, and Boots of Bearing floods you with it. You already provide a constant +20 movement speed aura, and when you activate it, you and nearby allies gain another 15%. Add in the bonus attack speed, and suddenly your teamfight and tower-taking potential is through the roof.

Keep in mind that in early stages of the game, initiation and escape tools are very limited. Not everyone has Blink Daggers or Force Staffs yet. You can imagine how much a massive movement speed boost can provide for the team. The team can catch someone with a stun, or walk away and escape from a fight, all on a 30-second cooldown.

Boots of Bearing has also opened the doors for carry Batrider, which has been a very popular pick in high-ranked pubs.

Holy Locket

Holy Locket received a noteworthy change in Patch 7.40. It now applies an additional 10% heal amplification to the target when you cast it on an ally. That’s on top of the built-in 15% heal amp you get from the passive ability, meaning you can provide 25% increased healing to a selected ally.

The item has become very popular on Dota 2’s newest hero – Largo, who is a very strong pick in the current meta. Another hero to buy it on is Keeper of the Light, who allows you to heal multiple allies at once.

Overall, this item is just an incredibly efficient way to keep your team healthy and keep the snowball going. If you think about it, Holy Locket works just like another aura item – and as we’ve seen throughout this patch, stacking auras is the easiest way to win you games.
