With Champs having come to a close, VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) sides are already turning their attentions to the off season and planning their rosters for next year. Players and coaches whose contracts expire in 2025 have the freedom to enter free agency, allowing them to negotiate with any organisations that they wish without the need for the previous team’s permission.
A player or coach entering free agency means that their contract has expired and they are officially unattached. This allows them to freely speak to any prospective team, but means that failing to come to an agreement — with a new team or otherwise — will leave them teamless heading into next year.
Those who are due to enter free agency may sometimes be allowed to explore their options early. In this scenario, their current team will need to have granted them permission to talk to other sides as tampering rules would generally prevent such an occurrence without having done so. If agreements with new teams are reached, contracts still cannot be signed until the individual’s existing contract has expired and free agency has officially begun.
If a player/coach does not get early permission from their current team to shop around, then they must wait for their contract to expire before beginning negotiations with other orgs and can only negotiate with their current one in the meantime.
An individual whose contract is due to expire this year is by no means guaranteed to leave their current team. They may negotiate a renewal before free agency begins, or could still re-sign after becoming a free agent and testing the waters.
Contract lengths of all VCT players and coaches are available to view through the VCT Global Contract Database, a repository available to the public to see who is under contract for all organisations.
