The grand finale of the League of Legends esports season, Worlds 2023, kicks off on October 9. The best teams from around the world will gather in South Korea to battle for the game’s most important trophy. The next six weeks will be filled to the brim with intense League of Legends action, highlighted by the first format change to the tournament in years. Here is everything you need to know about Worlds 2023.
Worlds 2023 is divided into three stages: Play-In, Swiss, and Knockout.
The Play-In Stage begins on October 10 and lasts until October 15. This stage features the seven lowest seeds coming into the tournament. Alongside them will be the winner of new Worlds Qualifying Series between NA’s and EU’s fourth seed taking place on October 9. These eight teams are split into two double elimination brackets of four teams each. All matches are best-of-three.
The 2-0 and 2-1 teams of each group, seeded one and two respectively, will advance to the Qualification Matches. Here, they will play the opposite seed of the other group in a best-of-five. The winner of each match will advance to the Swiss Stage.
Matches begin at 3:00 AM ET / 12:00 AM PT on Bracket days, October 10 to 14. The Qualification Matches begin on October 14 at 11:00 PM ET / 8:00 PM PT.
The brand-new Swiss Stage is replacing the classic Group Stage for Worlds 2023, running from October 19 to October 29. In this stage, the fourteen auto-qualified teams and two Play-In winners will be seeded into a Swiss-style bracket. There are five total rounds. Each round, teams will be matched against another team with their same record. Qualification and Elimination matches are best-of-three, while all other matches are best-of-one.
Teams that earn three wins will advance to the Knockout Stage, seeded by their record in the Swiss Stage. Losing three matches results in elimination from the tournament. For those familiar with Counter-Strike, this Valve Majors use this same format. Here is a handy info graphic to help visualize the Swiss Stage.
The first two days of Swiss, October 19 to 20, begin at 1:00 AM ET / 10:00 PM PT. Days three through eight of Swiss, October 21 to 28, begin at 3:00 AM ET / 12:00 AM PT. The final day of Swiss starts on October 29 at 12:00 AM ET / October 28 at 9:00 PM PT.
