Korean esports organization T1 has publicly issued a formal statement on Tuesday condemning the use of esports legend Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok’s image in a political context.

T1 responds following Presidential Candidate controversy for using Faker’s image

T1 issues statement after Presidential Candidate Kim Moon-soo used Faker’s iconic pose

On Monday, Kim Moon-soo, the conservative People Power Party (PPP) candidate in the upcoming South Korean presidential election, published a post on his X account as he recreated Faker’s iconic “Shh” pose, which he often uses ahead of competitions in trailers and video content. The political candidate also posted a comment: “I’ll take care of it. It’s gonna be over” — a well-known quote Faker gave his teammates during a crucial moment in a series, and even used the hashtag “Faker.”

Even though this shows how influential and popular Faker is in South Korea, the political use of his image was quickly condemned by T1, who issued a statement on the following day.

“We would like to address a recent matter involving the unauthorized use of the image and signature pose of Faker in a political-related content. “Faker is not affiliated with any political stance, party, or campaign. We respectfully ask that his image and any related expressions not be interpreted or misconstrued as conveying any political meaning. We are working on the removal of the post so that it does not affect our player in any way,” said T1 through their official social media channels.

The post by Kim Moon-Soo was met with backlash, and several urged the candidate to delete the content and refrain from involving Faker in political disputes. Kim has since removed the image from his account.

This is not the first time Faker has been used in a political context

Last year in March, then-President Yoon Suk Yeol mentioned Faker during a public policy discussion on youth engagement, and Faker himself has appeared in government-backed cultural campaigns.

Regarded as the greatest player in League of Legends esports, Faker was the first member to be inducted into the LoL Esports Hall of Legends by Riot Games last year and won the League of Legends World Championship back-to-back in the last two years.

Today also marks Faker’s 29th birthday, and to celebrate the moment, T1 collaborated with KOMSCO to release a limited edition commemorative medal.
