How to Fix Fortnite Stuck on Checking for Updates

At the surface, it might look like an issue with the Fortnite update at the moment. A broken patch meaning you’ll need to wait for a fresh one to get back in, or at least a hot fix. However, that’s not actually the problem. Instead, there seems to be a wider problem going on with Fortnite’s login service from Epic. The problem has been acknowledged, but a fix hasn’t been pushed out just yet.

There is a major problem right now that means Fortnite is down. But it’s not affecting everyone. It’s not even keeping people from queuing into new games. The problem has locked a ton of players out from getting into new games though. With Fortnite down, players have had to explore other games. Or just wait, until the problem gets an update from Epic. Which might not take that long. This is what the bug means and what you can do about it.

Why is Fortnite Down Right Now?

At the moment, if you’re trying to log in, then you might get hit with the Fortnite stuck on checking for updates issue. It’s a problem that was going on today. When trying to log in, players could have got hit with a looping window. While it is Fortnite stuck on checking for updates, it isn’t the update that is an issue.

Instead, it’s the login service. Epic had an outage with their log-in service. Meaning you couldn’t access your Epic account, or log into the game at all. That was behind the problem. It wasn’t the updates. While Fortnite stuck checking or updates was a problem, it was because the next screen was logging in. So, the game just got stuck on the “checking for updates” screen.

We aren’t actually expecting the next Fortnite update until the end of the season. We’re at the final patch for the Simpsons mini season, but that does mean that players will largely just have wait things out now. Which includes broken quests, and a ton of leaks going on. However, the Fortnite stuck on checking for updates bug has been solved a little quicker. It seems the Fortnite login is back up and working.

If you’re still getting hit by this, you just need to restart things. That normally takes care of the problem if Fortnite is down.

What Can You Do if Fortnite Stuck Checking for Updates?

The big issue with the Fortnite login service has been resolved, but what if you’re still stuck on it? In that case, it might not be a problem with the Fortnite login service, but something different. There are some steps you can run through to try and fix it.

  • Restart the game
  • Restart your internet
  • Reset Internet Settings for Fortnite Specifically
  • Re-install the game

That’s pretty much it. This problem doesn’t tend to happen outside of login issues though. Which means most of the time, it’s just a matter of waiting for Epic to push out a fix. Then restarting Fortnite. Sometimes you might need to restart the game, but a fix to the login system usually sorts out the Fortnite stuck on checking for updates problem.
