In a statement released on their official X account, North American org Shopify Rebellion has announced that it has released its entire Dota 2 roster and stepped away from the game entirely “for the time being”. While I can’t exactly say this is surprising looking at the team’s form, it’s still a huge blow to NA Dota as a whole.

Shopify Rebellion Releases Entire Roster With Promise to “See You Soon”

Shopify Rebellion entered the world of Dota 2 at the tail end of 2022 with some huge names on their roster including Arteezy, Saberlight and Cr1t. The first year proved to be something of a success after the team placed 3rd at DreamLeague Season 19, but this turned out to be their highest ever placement at a tier 1 event. Now, after ending the current season with a 13th-16th place finish at Dota 2 at the Esports World Cup and no qualification for The International, the only thing left to do was disband.

What’s next for Shopify Rebellion players?

While they have struggled to get any kind of traction in terms of results, Shopify Rebellion still boasted some very impressive players. There is currently no news on where any of them end up but for Timado, Yopaj-, Davai Lama, Hellscream and Skem, there is a decent chance they can earn spots on other teams in the post-TI roster shuffle.

EU domination is bad for Dota

Europe has completely dominated Dota in recent years. Even Chinese teams have barely been able to hold a candle to the likes of Gaimin Gladiators, Team Liquid and Tundra Esports. While this has been great news for European fans, Dota is a game that thrives on international competition and with other regions unable to get a foot in the door, it’s not surprising that Shopify Rebellion have decided to step away.

At this point, we can only hope that this doesn’t mark the beginning for other teams who have similarly struggled to keep afloat in Dota’s insanely competitive pro scene. With TI14 on the horizon, there’s a chance for others to make their mark but I for one wouldn’t be surprised to see Team Spirit go for their historic third win.
