Developer Riot Games has announced a sweeping overhaul of the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) ahead of the 2027 season, moving away from the traditional league format and into a fully tournament-based ecosystem. Riot hopes the changes mean that VCT 2027 will deliver more high-stakes matches, wider access to global events, and a significantly expanded live event footprint across the world.

A Tournament-First Ecosystem

Riot’s central philosophy behind VCT 2027 is simple: every match should matter. Starting next year, all teams will compete within a unified, single-tier system, a departure from the two-tiered partner/non-partner structure that defined the VCT’s earlier years. The new format is built around three guiding principles:

  • Every match should carry weight
  • The path to global events should be open
  • Live events should visit more locations.

Open Qualifiers serve as the entry point for every team’s journey, with multiple qualification windows available throughout the year. From there, teams advance into regional and international tournaments, with the best performers ultimately earning spots at Masters and Champions.

VCT Cups

The biggest structural addition to VCT 2027 is the removal of Stage and introduction of Cups: two per territory per year, eight in total globally, which replace traditional regular season league play entirely. Each Cup is a LAN-based tournament that determines the top teams in a given territory, concludes with a finals weekend event, and directly qualifies teams to Masters and Champions.

Kickoff will remain part of the calendar as a season-opening tournament with its own unique format, and will also be open to any team. Kickoff qualifiers will take place in Q4 of the prior year, after Champions concludes. All Kickoff and Cup competition will be held on LAN, split across Riot’s own studios and ‘bespoke venues’, with each Cup culminating in a fan-attended weekend finals event.

VCT 2027 Season Structure

The VCT 2027 season follows a three-cycle structure. The season opens with regional Kickoff Open Qualifiers (online), feeding into the international Kickoff on LAN, which in turn leads to the global Masters 1. The second cycle runs regional Open Qualifiers (online) into the international Cup 1 on LAN, with the top teams advancing to the global Masters 2. The third and final cycle mirrors this format with regional Open Qualifiers that feed into Cup 2 on LAN, with the season culminating at the global VALORANT Champions event.

Riot has noted that open qualifiers for each cycle will run concurrently with ongoing Cups and Masters events, giving teams multiple paths to qualify throughout the season.

Open Qualification to Global Events

For the first time in VCT history, any team in the world can qualify for Masters and Champions. Previously, non-partnered teams had to compete through an entire Ascension season for a single promotion slot into VCT in order to have the chance to qualify the following year. Under the new model, teams will have multiple shots per year at reaching the biggest stages.

Qualification paths will vary by region and may include community tournaments, partner events, collegiate events, Premier, and other formats, with specific regional details to be shared later in 2026. Partner teams will continue to benefit from direct seeding into later rounds of qualifiers, giving them added stability while the open pathway remains accessible to all.

Expanded Global Footprint

VCT 2027 will be the most geographically far-reaching version of the circuit yet. Riot plans to host more than 20 tournaments across at least 16 different cities worldwide, spanning regional Cups, international competitions, and the marquee global events. Every territory will host multiple LAN events throughout the season, bringing live VALORANT esports closer to fans than at any prior point in the game’s competitive history.

VCT 2027 Rewards and Prize Pools

The financial model has been rebuilt alongside the competitive structure. Prize pools across VCT 2027 will total more than $6 million USD per year, with fully funded travel provided for global events. Cash incentives are attached to each stage of competition and scale with the stakes involved: the payout approximately doubles from Cups to Masters, and doubles again from Masters to Champions.

Riot also highlighted the scale of its existing digital goods sharing programme: in 2025 alone, the company shared over $86 million from digital goods revenue with VCT teams. Starting in 2027, Riot wants every team competing at the highest level to have a pathway into that same financial ecosystem. For non-partner teams in particular, funds for Cup attendance will be made available quickly to help cover logistics like visas and travel. A portion of total funds will also be dedicated to Game Changers each year, with exact distribution mechanics to be confirmed later in 2026.

Partnership Model: A New Two-Year Cycle

VCT 2027 also introduces a refreshed partnership system, operating on a two-year cycle. Applications for prospective partner teams opened today, with established non-partner teams encouraged to reach out to their respective regional Riot Esports contacts.

Partnership applications will be evaluated across five criteria: commitment to growing the VALORANT community, community resonance across fandom and content, business sustainability and responsible operations, operational excellence and established infrastructure, and competitive success and performance development.

Partner teams will continue to receive a guaranteed base payment each year, performance bonuses tied to partnership goals, a Team Capsules share, and direct seeding into later rounds of qualifiers for additional stability and competitive exposure.

What This Means Going Forward

VCT 2027 represents the most significant structural evolution of VALORANT esports since the circuit launched. The shift to a fully tournament-based model removes the barriers that previously separated partner and non-partner teams, opens the path to Masters and Champions to any team in the world, and significantly expands the live event calendar.

With over 20 tournaments across 16+ cities, a prize pool exceeding $6 million, fully funded global travel, and a new two-year partnership cycle, the new VCT is designed to be faster, more accessible, and higher-stakes from the opening match of the season. Riot has confirmed that further details on regional calendars, slot allocations, Game Changers specifics, and exact event locations will be shared closer to Champions 2026.

Leo Faria, Global Head of VALORANT Esports at Riot Games, framed the announcement as a reimagining of the competitive experience for both teams and fans: “VCT 2027 is about reimagining how teams compete and how fans experience VALORANT esports. By shifting to a tournament-driven system with open access to our biggest events, we’re creating a more dynamic, high-stakes ecosystem where every match matters and every team has a shot at the global stage.”
