The first Starcraft was released on March 31, 1998. Even though the game is over 20 years old, you can still see the standards that Blizzard create when they launched their real-time strategy game. This led to the release of the expansion pack called Starcraft: Brood War, which truly became the first monolith of esports. At the time, Brood War was, without a doubt, the biggest esport we had ever seen. It spawned two different channels in South Korea for just the game itself. Then, came Starcraft II. Almost immediately on release in 2010, SC2 was one of the premier esports in the world. After several years of massive success, the game sort of trailed off, as the rise of games such as League of Legends and Dota 2 took over the scene. However, it rose to prominence again in 2017, as the game was changed to a free-to-play model and an influx of players (and money) were put into the esport scene. To this day, SC2 is one of the most popular games in Asia and certain regions of Europe.
