First Impressions of the ROCCAT Magma Membrane RGB Gaming Keyboard
When I first removed the ROCCAT Magma Membrane from the box, the keyboard felt exceptionally light and fragile. I’m not typically clumsy with tech and gaming gear, but I felt like I was going to break it.
And then I dropped it. It wasn’t a hard thud, but it landed partially on my Ninja Turtle slippers hard enough to pop 5 keys. Luckily, the keys popped back into place quite easily.
The white, semi-transparent, plastic front looks a bit awkward against the black, plastic, keys. When plugged in, however, the combination makes all the sense. The 5-zone backlight is beneath the keys and illuminates through the white, translucent, membrane plate.
The ROCCAT Magma is a quiet and cute, RGB festival for your fingers. You can customize the 5 key zones’ RGB lighting through ROCCAT’s AIMO Lighting Engine in the SWARM software. Outside of the 5-zone backlighting, there is no per-key customization. Even with only having the
Keyboard typing is incredibly quiet. The palm rest is a bit flat and not padded. However, this seems to be more comfortable, for me, than thick, padded ones. The palm rest snaps into the keyboard. And to remove it, lift the keyboard, fold the palm rest back, and just lightly pull it out. The grooves on the edge of the keyboard and the palm rest look like they would be a pain to clean.
Though this membrane keyboard is quiet, I do miss the feel of a tactile, mechanical keyboard. The ROCCAT Magma Membrane’s keys are close together, but still individually spread enough to be quick and responsive.
Though the keys are very responsive, they are not responsive enough for competitive gaming. I noticed a slight delay while playing competitive Overwatch. It may not be noticeable for casual players. However, it could present a problem for gamers who are serious about competitive gaming.
Hot, Magma Feature
The ROCCAT Magma Membrane RGB may lack some major features that usually come with gaming keyboards. However, the Game Mode feature is one of the best highlights of the ROCCAT Magma. Game Mode allows you to convert the CAPS LOCK into Easy Shift. This is great to help gamers avoid typing in ALL CAPS in the chatbox while playing multiplayer games.
Conclusion
For beginner PC gamers looking for an entry-level gaming keyboard with flashy RGB, try the ROCCAT Magma Membrane RGB keyboard. This is a decent membrane keyboard for casual gamers on a budget. Gamers who prefer more competitive play would likely overlook this keyboard for a mechanical keyboard.
