First Impression of the Das Keyboard X50Q Smart Keyboard
The X50Q is a beautiful piece of equipment with a solid build, full N-key rollover, and multifunctional RGB lighting system. The X50Q does have an industrial look, with four screws on the top of the keyboard and four on the bottom. From the volume dial to the thin, yet soft palm rest, this keyboard impresses right out the box.
This full-size keyboard is wired, with a long, 6ft braided cord, meaning no lag. It also has an alien-esque key font. Granted, some people may or may not like this departure from typical keyboard fonts. The soft, tactile key switches are comfy and not as loud as other mechanical keyboards. The keys are very responsive. So, fast typists may need to adjust to avoid many typos.
Customize your RGB lighting and streamline your workload by downloading the Das Keyboard Q Software for Das Keyboard. The Das Keyboard Q Software has preset RGB profiles and allows for per-key RGB customization. The RGB customization extends to the side panels on both sides of the keyboard.
What Makes the X50Q So Smart?
Though the keyboard works as soon as you plug in the USB-A, it’s the software that makes the difference. What makes the X50Q a smart keyboard is the ability to use applets in Das Keyboard Q Software. Das Keyboard Q Software has applets for almost everything to help stay organized and receive important alerts.
Some of the applets in Das Keyboard Q include Asana, Trello, CPU and GPU usage, and Twitch alerts. The Q Software allows users to drag and drop an applet to a key of their choosing. Unfortunately, Das Keyboard Q Software is only compatible with Windows.
In addition to the customizable applets, the X50Q keyboard allows for setting macros. To set up macros, press FN+F11 to begin recording, input the desired macro sequence, then FN+F11 to end recording.
The dedicated multimedia keys in the right corner are easily accessible. And the volume dial is a treat. Pressing the volume dial is supposed to bring up the Das Keyboard Q Software. However, it did not do this for me.
The only other issue I had with the X50Q is the two legs underneath the keyboard. They do not elevate the keyboard much, so it still feels quite flat. But even lying flat, typing was still comfortable.
Conclusion
There are less expensive mechanical keyboards on the market. However, the Das Keyboard X50Q is an excellent, mechanical keyboard for the gamer who multitasks. The Das Keyboard Q Software really takes smart keyboarding to the next level. Though, I would have liked for a bit more customization with the applets. Still, the Das Keyboard X50Q would make a great addition to any gamer’s setup.
