When the news broke from OverActive Media that the Toronto Defiant would be hosting their Contenders League team in Montreal, Quebec, fans across Canada speculated to what this new Canadian Contenders league team would be called. Most thought that OverActive Media would release the players, team and logos over a long period of time but thankfully the Defiant announced their roster, logo and team name all within the week.

With a logo that proudly incorporates a bird, the fleur-de-lis and an “m”, the Montreal Rebellion are set to be a big contender this season. This Academy team is a joint partnership between OverActive Media and Mirage Sport Electronique (MSE). The Montreal Rebellion, a team that reflects the spirit and rich history of the French in Canada, has signed a roster full of international Overwatch stars like Shayne “Chayne” La Rocque, Nikolai “Nagga” Dereli,  and Andreas “Logix” Berghmans. To lead this Canadian team to victory is indomitable coaching duo of Chris (Dream) Myrick and Alex (byZenith) Ames.

We’re excited to see the Montreal Rebellion playing in downtown Montreal from the Esports Central Arena. Unlike other online leagues, the Rebellion will be playing in front of the audience of the Esports central Arena in addition to the hundreds of thousands of viewers online.

Seeing the emergence of more Canadian Overwatch teams, both in the Overwatch League and in the Contenders is a huge step for the Canadian esports ecosystem – especially in a game where Canada has previously performed well at. Team Canada placed top three in the past two years and has been a powerhouse for some of the strongest Overwatch talent.

The Contenders League starts in just under a week so be sure to tune into the start of Season 1 on February 25th on Twitch.
