The opening MPL MY S17 Week 1 of the newly franchised league delivered exactly what fans hoped for. It’s been a week full of non-stop action and one near-upset that nearly shook the defending champions.

By the end of Week 1, Selangor Red Giants (SRG) and RRQ Tora sit firmly at the top of the standings. With flawless 2-0 match records openning up the new season for MLBB esports. Several teams are already scrambling to find form early in the season. But while the standings tell one story, the games themselves—especially Day 2—hint at a far more competitive split ahead.

RRQ Tora wasted no time establishing themselves as a serious contender this season. With a dominant 4-0 game record across two matches, they looked like the most polished team in Week 1, dismantling opponents with clean macro and decisive teamfights.
Everybody doubted that RRQ Tora would find early success in the league. Their roster consists of 3 different regions, but they’ve shown otherwise that teams can easily gain chemistry with enough training.
Close behind them are the reigning champions, Selangor Red Giants. While SRG also finished 2-0 in matches, their slightly shakier 4-1 game record suggests they weren’t entirely untouchable—something that became especially clear in their clash against Team Rey the entire series.
Still, a perfect week is a perfect week. SRG continue to show why they remain the team to beat in MPL MY S17 Week 1. Towards the top of the MPL MY Power Rankings. Maintaining their composure even when pushed into uncomfortable territory.

Just below the top two, Invictus Gaming impressed in their limited showing, securing a clean 2-0 series win to start their campaign. Although they’ve only played one match so far, their controlled performance hints at strong potential heading into Week 2, especially facing RRQ Tora at the start of the week.
AC Esports and Team Flash, meanwhile, split their opening matches at 1-1. While Team Flash beat AC Esports to get their first win, AC Esports showcased that they could beat the pre-season predicted high position as Bigetron by Vitality MY. Team Flash on the other hand lost to RRQ Tora, resulting them to be positioned in the middle of the pack.
These middle-tier teams will be crucial to watch moving forward. With the league’s double round-robin format, consistency will be the deciding factor between playoff contention and early elimination, especially in its first season as a franchise league.
At the bottom of the standings, Team Vamos, Bigetron MY, and Team Rey all struggled to find their footing in MPL MY S17 Week 1.
Team Rey, in particular, finished the week 0-2 in matches, tying Bigetron MY for the lowest game differential. On paper, it looks like a disappointing start. But that record doesn’t tell the full story. If there’s one takeaway from Week 1, it’s that Team Rey are far more dangerous than their standings suggest.

Day 2’s third match between Team Rey and Selangor Red Giants turned out to be the most exciting series of the week—and nearly its biggest upset.
Coming into the match and MPL MY S17 Week 1, SRG were heavily favored. As defending champions with an established core and dominant opening performance, most expected a straightforward sweep. Team Rey had other plans.
Despite their earlier struggles in game 1 of this new era for MPL MY. Team Rey came into the series swinging, showing significantly improved coordination and resilience. They managed to take a game off SRG at the start of the series. Surprising them with a comeback win after the everyone had already marked Game 1 as SRG’s.
The following games weren’t a walk in the park for SRG either as Team Rey got the early advantage for both games, especially Game 3, where SRG needed to play on the backfoot.
For a moment, it genuinely felt like an upset was brewing. Team Rey’s aggression and willingness to challenge SRG head-on disrupted the champions’ usual tempo. But experience ultimately won out. SRG steadied themselves in the deciding game, leaning on their veteran core to regain control and close out the series 2-1. It wasn’t their cleanest win. But it was a statement in its own way for MPL MY S17 Week 1.
Even when pushed to the limit, champions find a way.
If Week 1 proved anything, it’s that MPL MY S17 is shaping up to be far more competitive than expected. Giving MPL ID a run for its money.
Week 2 will be crucial for teams trying to bounce back from slow starts. Team Rey, in particular, will be one to watch. If they can replicate their performance against SRG, their first win may be just around the corner after MPL MY S17 Week 1.
As for SRG, they remain the gold standard, but no longer untouchable. And in a league this competitive, that’s exactly what fans want to see.
