Fans of the Marvel vs Capcom series were not left out in the cold during the EVO 2020 title reveal announcement. To celebrate MVC2’s 20th anniversary, EVO will feature a special invitational tournament.

The tournament organizer will be running this eight man, Marvel vs Capcom 2 invitational during the course of the event. However, it was not specified if the game will be run on Sunday in the Mandalay Bay Arena.

“We had to do something for the game’s 20th anniversary,” Joey “Mr Wizard” Cuellar said on the stream announcement. “We had the game at EVO for like 10 years, it was great. I think that this will be a great opportunity for those that came into the FGC after Street Fighter IV in 2009 to see what all the hype was about in Marvel 2.”

The prize pool will initially be set at $10,000, donated from EVO itself, and the largest prize pool MVC2 has ever had. Cuellar mentioned that there was a possibility of the tournament using a crowdfunding platform like Matcherino or Smash.gg. The opportunity would allow them to offer a “Compendium”, of sorts, with new tiers unlocking various rewards for the event.

Specifics on the rewards and what fans might get for supporting the event were not announced. For years EVO has produced its own merch in partnership with Gaming Generations. There’s no reason to believe this wouldn’t be the case here, either.

The tournament will feature at least four of the game’s previous Evolution champions, and four wildcard entrants. The Champions include Justin Wong (seven time MvC2 champion from 2001-2004, 2006, 2008, 2010), Duc “Ducvader” Do (2000, 2005), Michael “IFC Yipes” Mendoza (2007), and Sanford Kelly (2009).

Qualifiers will be held at the following events:

NorCal Regionals – April 10th – 12th
Big E Gaming – April 10th – 12th
Combo Breaker – May 22nd – 24th
Last Chance Qualifier – EVO 2020 – July 31st
