Things are really heating up at ESL One Birmingham 2026 now, with there still being plenty for some of the lower-ranked teams to play for heading into the final day of the group stage.

ESL One Birmingham 2026 Day 3: Aurora keep on trucking, OG live to fight again

Aurora Gaming continue to impress thus far, really making the most out of the fact that they have their full roster once again after having to play with stand-ins for their last two tournament appearances. OG, meanwhile, took the phrase “make or break” pretty seriously today, winning the games that they had to in order to survive.

Brilliant like an aurora

Like I said above, Aurora are really locked in right now, boasting a staggering 11-1 map record after three days of group stage play. Considering that this is the first time in a while that both Egor “Nightfall” Grigorenko and Rafli “Mikoto” Fathur Rahman are in their lineup, I’d say this was a tournament that they had to make a statement at.

Not only have they made that statement, but they’ve announced themselves to be at Birmingham quite loudly. Clean sweeps against Team Falcons, Xtreme Gaming, OG, and Virtus.pro mean that they’re a lock to start from the upper bracket — which is what a team always wants in these long run competitions.

What I am worried about, though, is the strong possibility that the upcoming major balance patch throws off their rhythm in the playoffs. If analyst and commentator Robson “TeaGuvnor” Merritt’s patch waiting room is for real, I’m afraid that Aurora might not stick the landing if they don’t get to grips with the metagame right away. They’ll at least have the nice tailwind that they’ve generated for themselves thus far at ESL One Birmingham — but momentum is only half the battle if there’s a whole update to sift through in between the group stage and the playoffs.

By the skin of their teeth

I’m not gonna lie: OG are still in a spot of bother even after breaking even against Team Falcons today. They are still alive after a good draft win versus Falcons, but ideally they win both their games against XG tomorrow. If my math is correct, they will be eliminated from the tournament if they merely go 1-1, let alone 0-2.

Nevertheless, I liked what I saw from them in that game 2 against Falcons in particular. Recognizing that the Batrider would be going mid in the hands of Stanislav “Malr1ne” Potorak, they picked Queen of Pain for Erin Jasper “Yopaj” Ferrer. Batrider absolutely hates this matchup, and true enough, Malr1ne got shut down hard thanks to the smart draft decision by OG.

With Yopaj getting so far ahead of Malr1ne, he was able to help the rest of his team right away, particularly with John Anthony “Natsumi-” Vargas’ Morphling. From there, they simply outscaled the rest of Falcons, and this was in spite of Ammar “ATF” Al-Assaf’s best efforts as Timbersaw — one of the best heroes to play against Morphling.

If they can carry the momentum from this game 2 into their series with XG tomorrow, there may be hope left for OG in terms of making it to the playoffs. It will still depend on how the rest of the teams around them fare tomorrow, but they’ll give themselves a pretty good shot at moving on if they can go 2-0 versus XG.

What to watch on day 4

Mercifully, it should be a light day of play tomorrow — unless some crazy tiebreaker shenanigans ensue. There are only four matches per group slated for day 4, so if there aren’t any ties to look at by the end, that should be all for tomorrow’s proceedings. That said, there are some interesting matchups to look out for still.

Team Yandex vs. MOUZ — 12:00 GMT

After a rough third day where they lost every game that they played in, MOUZ will have to pass yet another big test tomorrow at ESL One Birmingham in the form of Team Yandex. If their blistering start to the tournament is to be considered actually legitimate, they’ll have to bring their A-game in this series in particular. Otherwise, they might have to start from the lower bracket — and we already know that this team isn’t really in the best of shape for that kind of run right now.

BetBoom Team vs. GamerLegion — 12:00 GMT

GamerLegion have somehow put themselves in a position to actually make the playoffs at ESL One Birmingham, though they’re currently toeing the line between starting from the lower bracket and going home from the United Kingdom. They’ll be facing some very tough opponents in the form of BetBoom Team, who we last saw take third place at PGL Wallachia Season 7

But, BetBoom aren’t having that good of a time at Birmingham at the moment, with only four wins versus their eight losses thus far. If GamerLegion can capitalize accordingly, we might just see the North Americans pull off a huge upset.

Team Spirit vs. Nigma Galaxy — 14:45 GMT

As always, it’s a coinflip as to whether or not Nigma Galaxy will do well at any given tier 1 tournament. They’re tied for fifth place with every other team that’s below the cutoff point in Group B, so there’s still a chance for them to make it to the playoffs depending on how well they and Virtus.pro do tomorrow. The problem is that they’re up against Team Spirit, who are 9-3 right now and are looking very solid throughout the first three days. Could Nigma summon up some of that power they get from their diehard fans against one of the stronger teams in the field? We’ll have to see.
