Wait, is the G2 CS2 roster actually good now?

For a long, long time, the very marrow of G2 was NiKo and m0NESY. Their departure, however, left G2 scavenging for pieces to fill the puzzle. Then, in their revamp, they changed their IGL, the coach was supplanted, and to fill the shoes of m0NESY strode SunPayus, accompanied by sAw. Yet, doubts clung to the roster. The G2 CS2 roster, once a colossus of firepower, now had a very different look. And yet, to the astonishment of many, the roster that initially looked like it was filled with leftovers defeated Vitality, who are now a part of the argument of the best Counter-Strike team ever, to lift the BLAST Open London 2025 trophy. It wasn’t mere serendipity. So how did it happen? Was it the new leader? The new coach? Or something else entirely? Let’s take a closer look.

How the trio of malbsMd, HeavyGod, and MATYS brought home the victory for G2

Success is rarely the product of a single spark. Even for G2, there are multiple factors that led to their proud victory. But, if you were to simply pick one flame that burned the brightest for G2, it has to be the incandescence of HeavyGod. From the moment he burst into notice at BLAST Bounty with a 1.33 rating to his repeat showing in London, he has been G2’s ballast.

That has done more for G2 than simply being more firepower at their disposal. His reliability freed malbsMd to unleash a more feral, instinctive style that fits him naturally. Together, they have nurtured a very complementary style that can go a long way for this G2 CS2 lineup.

Yet every story needs its revelation, and MATYS has provided it. At 23, he has taken on new roles, new pressure, and higher competition with unexpected poise. Aside from an off-performance at EWC 2025, his rise has been a steady crescendo. MATYS’ surge to power has come as an euphoric surprise for me. In my previous article about the G2 CS2 roster, I had my own skepticism about bringing MATYS to the lineup, but I stand happily proven wrong. This 1.28 rated performance at BLAST Open may be his highest-rated at Tier 1, but I now feel confident that there is still more in the tank to come. I came across a post on X, where this trio of G2 were dubbed as the new “Three Musketeers,” and I couldn’t agree more. I think these three complete each other in multiple ways, and they make a great pack.

The brains behind the firepower

Now, while the simple eye test sure gave the stage to HeavyGod, but what huNter- (and in all likelihood, sAw) have done to the team in the little time they have been together has to be acknowledged. It was first against FaZe on Inferno, where seemingly every move from G2 seemed prescient, as if huNter- always knew what karrigan was up to. And it’s not just anti-strats I am talking about, but the cohesion, the confidence in each other to go for late round proactive plays, and the communication to help each other out with utility. These fundamentals take time to be seeped into the players, yet G2 has absorbed them with startling speed.

I know huNter- has a reputation for being a hard worker, and it has shown recently. His tireless preparation revealed itself in perfect calls, great teamwork, well-timed flash assists, and anti-strats. Keeping all my skepticism aside, he could become a really good IGL. And he has been fragging well on top of it. Isn’t he looking like the complete package? Well, this is the modern day we live in, where once-superstar riflers like apEX and huNter- are proving themselves as potent IGLs. Teams don’t necessarily have loose ends, and that is proving to be the recipe for success for the G2 CS2 roster right now.
